Summer is a short, but oh-so-sweet season in the Pacific Northwest, so it's crucial that Portlanders make the most of it. Here's a list of our favorite bars in Portland with outdoor seating, so that you can maximize your Vitamin D exposure without taking up ultimate frisbee. (Photo: flickr user wickenden)

East Burn's patio is open year-round, but nothing says summer like your own, personal swinging chair. Chose a brew from the 15+ East Burn keeps on tap, and ask a buddy for a push. Just like elementary school, but with beer.
Lines form outside the Pied Cow on hot summer nights, but the secret sweet spot here is the late afternoon. Skip the hookahs, and opt for a pitcher of sangria in the lush, secluded backyard patio while you wait for your slice of marionberry pie.
In-floor path lighting, Jettson-esque decor, and impeccably dressed waitresses (they wear thigh-high boots--in the summer!)--when you step off Departure's elevator, you leave Portland behind. Get your bearing on their rooftop patio with Departure's namesake cocktail: Aviation gin, fresh lime, green chartreuse and a maraschino cherry.
This neighborhood hangout is housed in a signless, non-descript building, but Vendetta is well worth the second glance. On warm summer nights, regulars flock to Vendetta's enormous patio for cheap beer, friendly bartenders and a mellow, no-nonsense vibe.
Stuck inside all day? Go directly to Bar Bar's lot-sized patio, tucked just off North Mississippi's bustling main drag. You'll want to take advantage of their amazing happy hour menu--their ultra thin, amazingly crispy french fries may be the best in Portland.
