Editorial Review for Sellwood Park – by Jenny Tom

In Short
Scenic park offers a plethora of activities--picnicking, basketball, baseball, softball, tennis, horseshoes--even hiking. A paved path meanders through towering pines, which dwarf the picnic tables, creating a private, campground-like setting. A shelter provides protection from the rain. The playground is one of the biggest and best around. The area is fenced off from the rest of the park, so parents don't have to worry about little ones wandering off.

The Extras

Topping off the park's attractions is the popular Sellwood Pool and historic bath house, right next door. In 1910, this big, round pool replaced the Jefferson Street bath house, a floating stucture with a slat bottom that was closed due to pollution in the river. Thanks to a Portland Parks Bond Project, the pool and bath house were recently renovated, preparing it for use for years to come.

OK, I used to live in Portland a really long time ago, and I remember going to the park and the pool all the time with my family. I took swimming lessons there. Even though I'm no future Olympic champion, I still appreciate the memories that looking at the pictures of the park and the pool gave me!!! I can still remember clinging for dear life to the side of the pool (in the section that was only about 2 feet deep!) Then again, when you're only six years old, two feet is a lot! I love Portland and want to visit again sometime!!!

Pros: great location, I love how the park is a short walk from the shopping district, the elementary school

Cons: ummm...none that I can think of, but I guess sometimes the pool can be crowded on really hot days

recently organized a LARGE group picnic here. Everyone loved it and had tons of fun. it's very well shaded, yet very open for game areas. kids go crazy for all activities. peaceful and gorgeous.

Pros: beautiful, fun areas, lots of space

Cons: bathrooms
