In Short
The first major planting of trees was 104 Lombardy poplars and elms in 1877, at the direction of the City Council. Unlike their counterparts to the North, these blocks have no play areas, but provide a peaceful resting place in the heart of the city. Among the many works of art that have found a home here is the Simon Benson Memorial. This drinking fountain is one of 24 bowl fountains that Benson gave to the city in 1912.

The Details on South Park Blocks

Know Before You Go:

Many stories are told as to Benson's motivation, the favorite being that he saw a young girl crying at a parade because she was thirsty. Benson was so moved that he donated the fountains. The city has since added 20 fountains, and are among Portland's unique features.
