In Short – The first major planting of trees was 104 Lombardy poplars and elms in 1877, at the direction of the City Council. Unlike their counterparts to the North, these blocks have no play areas, but provide a peaceful resting place in the heart of the city. Among the many works of art that have found a home here is the Simon Benson Memorial. This drinking fountain is one of 24 bowl fountains that Benson gave to the city in 1912. –
