In Short
Long ago, a neon tavern sign with two burned-out letters gave Hanigan's its universally acknowledged nickname, "The Vern." A facelift left this watering hole looking brighter and a little like a college rec room. But there's still duct-taped carpet, young rock and rollers, crusty old-timers and a loud jukebox drowning out the TVs. Twenty-two taps dispense a wide selection of microbrews, although Pabst is always popular. Entertainment options include two pool tables, foosball, pinball and video poker.

Smoky (well, not anymore, I guess), dark, cheap beer- what more could you want? The Vern is a good spot for the neighborhood. Beer specials are great!

The funniest thing about the Vern is that it got it's name by the T & A in tavern being burned out for so long. There are always a lot of real fun, down to earth people in here. Beware of the barmaid, she's a tad scary at first and had no problem putting you in yout place. Once you know her rules all wil be right with the world again. Cheapest, coldest PBR in PDX!!!

There is a scene in Portland of young people that graduated from being alternative or indie and they have a fluid manifesto. Some characteristics are an encyclopedic knowledge of obscure, adept music, ironic fashion (50's glasses, and nerdy clothing), and a love for the lowlife. Vern is a smoky dive, with a superb jukebox and ironically horrible jukebox, and band and movie posters. Your receipt may say Hannigan's Bar and Grill, but due to the sign outside that once said tavern now reads Vern due to a truck smashing into it a while back. Now if you're not sold on the perfect dive bar for southeast Portlanders, then maybe you'll like the $2 special on two different microbrews everynight served all days except Sundays where they sell Pabst Blue Ribbon for $1. Any Vern frequenting hipsters that happens to come across this review will think I could write a superior review of The Vern, since its patrons are all self-described Burroughs influenced geniuses of the written word.
