The consummate neighborhood restaurant, this upscale Hawthorne Blvd cafe makes a mean roast chicken, excellent thin crust pizza, and possibly the city's most famous burger. Great happy hour, daily from 5-6pm and 9pm to close.

Ultra-reliable cafe with amazing roast chicken and a solid burger. Nothing like its modernist big brother restaurant next door, this spot is classic cooking all the way. Try the Happy Hour menu.
Solid choice.. Went midweek. Bit of a drive to south-east, but it was worth it. We ordered two courses, and both were delicious, though timing seemed a little slow considering the number of other people in the dining room. Cocktails were nicely made, prices reasonable and service decent, if not very personable. It's not much of a destination, but if we lived in the neighborhood I expect we'd be in often.
so many good things. Castagna and cafe have been at the top of our list for years. We are reluctant to go to many places in town because of inconsistent food or service, but Castagna alwaysdelivers innovative yet classic dishes, and service is high quality for the price. The cafe gets the fine dining quaility of the restaurant at bistro prices. Wine list is one of the best in town. Keep up the good work!
Where understated elegance blends seamlessly with everyday fare..
In Short
Starkness and clean lines highlight this bistro's décor. The stainless-steel kitchen opens onto the austere dining room, which has loud concrete floors, dark-wood tables and a wall of windows overlooking Hawthorne Boulevard. However, the menu offers families and couples homey fare such as crispy, fried risotto balls with melted fontina cheese and pesto pizza topped with potatoes, pine nuts and Parmesan cheese. For dessert, the favorite treat is creamy homemade sorbets or IBC root beer floats.
A favorite. Great Service, even when the place is packed. Food has been consistantly excellent, and the staff is knowledgeable and friendly without being overbearing. Wonderful creative cocktails too!
Best Deal In Town!. A simple, if not austere, interior. Fantastic and attentive staff. The food is well prepared and the portions are reasonably generous. The best day to go is Sunday, as long as you don't mind the holdovers from the main restaurants weekend specials. You get the same meals they had in the more expensive restaurant in the cafe on Sunday at reduced prices. Didn't seem to be any problem with freshness. We had an incredible meal PLUS drink for under 30 dollars each. Great little place!
Boo salmon, yeah burger. Go to 4th Avenue Bento and eat delicious salmon for $5.95. Spruce it up with a piece of onion, garlic and a few potatoes and pay $16 here. If you don't mind paying a high premium for "atmosphere", than this isn't a bad place. The hamburger with blue cheese was wonderful, tops Higgins for best upscale burger. The Roasted Red Pepper soup was so-so. Their version of Pots du Creme was decent. The service is smiles, but far from above and beyond.
simple is better. If you are in the mood for obnoxiously decorated, foo-foo cusine which is more for show than taste, do not venture into Cafe Castagna (unless you want a lesson in real food). If you are in the mood for amazingly fresh tastes, wonderfully concieved dishes and a zen like relaxed atmosphere you've found the right place. Cafe Castagna's roast chicken is right-on. Their burgers & fries are the best in town, by far! They have great apps and desserts too! Well worth the money and time spent here. I'll be back! Do yourself a favor and try this truly honest, simple and fresh bistro fare.
Great Burger. Castagna has the best burgers and I might add fries in town.....
