Editorial Review for The Basement Pub – by Christina Melander
The Scene
Replete with a fish tank, the old-school arcade game Asteroids and a cache of tattered Encyclopedia Americas, the Basement Pub feels like your best friend's rec room. Open since 2001, it has quickly established itself as a neighborhood hangout and a pickup scene for the Hawthorne set.
The Draw
It's all about value at the Basement--fitting, since it was formerly a convenience mart. Pabst and Hamms go for $1.75 a pop and microbrews are $3.25; a few basic wines are available for $3 to $4. Small, dark and low-ceilinged all around, flattering candlelight flickers in an alcove set off from the main room, rendering it a prime spot for a romance or a heart-to-heart with a good pal. The Clash and AC/DC wailing from a decent juke and a bookshelf crammed with board games ensure entertainment.

Insider Tips
When to GoBig pints (20 ounce) at regular pint prices can be had during daily happy hour (3pm-8pm) and all night on "Big-Ass Mondays."
Save MoneySnacks such as curried chickpeas and rice, chips with hummus or movie theater nachos cost just $1 each with any bevvie purchase. The kitchen also cranks out more substantial fare, like gyros and pita sandwiches.

Was int town from tacoma, looking fro a non pretentious, fun, dive bar my fiancee, a friend fo orus and I could go to , be relaxed, have some inexpensive drinks and enjoy a good evening. We found the Basement pub on Citysearch, sounded like our kind of place so we went. We were FAR from disappointed, had a great time, the owner purchased us some drinks, the bar is just as it is billed, like your friends rec room. I got to watch my Pats beat the Giants on their TV then relaxedo n the old comfy couches while I enjoyed Hamms & played some Pac Man. Point being this was an awesome place, I will be bacl again for sure and have recommended it to all my friends who go to or through Portland.
Pros: comfortable, inexpensive drinks
Cons: none I could see

Cool place to lounge that might as well be a friend's house...too small to have a bunch of idiotic drunks in and they only serve beer. Cool style and a worth bar to check out if you haven't yet.
Pros: Good atmosphere and a great relaxing bar.
Cons: None really.
