What Our Expert Scouts Say

August 17, 2012

The DJs spin vinyl, the beers are cheap & if they should charge cover, its for the added entertainment from the bouncer/riff-raff battle.

A sound place for catching live shows with cheap beers and questionable bathrooms, Tube offers a downtown alternative to Dante's.

Bouncers steal your stuff. DONT GO HERE. Small, stinks like period and sweat, bouncers like to steal your coat, posessions, and your OWN id to feel like they're in control. Extremel expensive drinks and bathroom had feces and urine all over the floor/toilet.

Fun Happy hour. This is the place to start, or end a good happy hour. It goes till 10pm! The drinks are very stiff, and they have a lot of vegan options, and they are good. I love the ambiance of this place, and the creepy bunnies on the wall are well worth seeing. Highly recommended for their happy hour!

A-ok.. Very smoky, kinda expensive....HOWEVER my drink is always strong and they have vegan food, so A+ in my book. The rabbits with red eyes are creepy but fun, and this is a great place for people-watching and dancing.

different days...different experiences..... I've been here on super busy days, and dead days, and it seems to be a different crowd every time. One night it was all "hipsters" and "scene kids" and another night it wsa more of a preppier crowd.. All in all, I like the Tube but it is usually way too loud to talk to your friends, even on the slow days, BUT they always make my drinks super strong.

The best kept secret in Portland. Generally speaking, the type of person most likely to actually write a review of a bar on citysearch is not going to like this bar. Which is good. Because those people are not welcome. High maintenance douche bags, frat boys, and self-entitled yuppies can all go somewhere else. That being said, the bartenders at Tube are really nice and down to earth despite their "hipster" appearances. Just don't expect them to kiss your butt. The happy hour is probably one of the longest in the city (5 - 10 daily. 2 dollar wells!) and the bar menu welcomes vegans and vegetarians but still takes care of the meat eaters. The DJ's are probably the most innovative in the city. Where else can you hear Universal Order of Armageddon or Les Georges Leningrad in a bar while drinking a two dollar well drink and eating a vegan ham and cheese?

MADE SOME CHANGES...... As of recently it seems the bar has revamped several things. New flooring, new booths, no more duct tape holding things together, new DJ's, better smoke eater and the menu. $2 wells drinks and super cheap veggie & vegan happy hour menu ( theres is a "real" hot dog and 2 "real" turkey options though!) The bar does still get a little smokey on super busy nights but as far as im concerned its totally improved. Tuesday night s seem to bring in a huge crowd and the Dj is pretty good. I like thursdays. Less people, good real good DJ and it feels way more relaxed. This bar isn't for the faint of heart or anyone who expects table service. I love the TUBE.

Crowded, but amusing.... Upon entering Tube, I immediately felt claustrophobic--perhaps a trick of the layout--but was further enhanced by the throngs of hip kids. Hip kids dancing in the only path to the bar, hip kids making out or otherwise occupying the benches and chairs along the wall, hip kids lined up a mile long for the bathroom. The drinks were not amazing enough to compensate for the atmosphere, and though the bartender was friendly enough, it took some serious maneuvering to even get to the bar. One plus--watching drunk hipsters dance themselves silly to Top 40 hits. If you are in the scene, then you will find a flock of like-minded people here. As for me, somewhere with a little more personal space would be much better.

Stylized, futuristic concept bar lures scene-seekers out of the Old Town fray.. In Short
Designed to evoke the feeling of being inside a television, the avant-garde space glows green, with low ceilings and glossy, curved walls. Tables and chairs swim in an overpowering, ever-present cloud of cigarette smoke, while anti-hipsters line the bar. Quiet neo-psychedelic pop combined with the use of Lucite and aluminum creates a spacey, ultramodern vibe. People come for the unique setting, the cocktails and bar menu aren't a major draw.

Ruined. What was once one of the most unusual and beautiful bars in portland has now gone down "the tube". I hadn't been in nearly a year and the change is shocking. The place was once sleek and stylish. The place has been poorly remodeled. There is duct tape holding parts of the ceiling up as well as the vinyl bench seats together. They added some space but ruined the flow and the atmosphere reminds me more of the Sandy Hut than "futuristic concept bar". Good job hipsters!
