Dark red walls + candlelit tables + a whole menu full of bubbly concoctions = your dream date. The space was once home to an early Portland brothel, so you know there are sexy vibes in the ether.

Once a brothel, now a place to secretly rendezvous with that special someone. Maybe even cozy up on the same side of the table eating off of the same plate. Dark, romantic yet noisy -no one will over hear your secret declarations of love or lust.

Formerly a hotel w/ a shady past, now an upscale nightspot serving fanciful cocktail creations & tasty food. Dark, romantic ambience.
favorite bar in portland. It may be crowded on the weekends and there might be lots of couples on dates in this romantically decorated "hotel", but they have the best French Martini and the food's good too. I've tried the enchiladas and the cheese plate and I've had some of the drink specials which were rather tasty as well. I love the decor at this unique spot.
Faublous Food, Great ambiance - Best kept secret!. I called in advance to see if it was o.k. to bring our own birthday cake, which it was. Our party started rolling in at 8 pm. As our group expanded the wait staff found us more chairs until other near-by tables emptied out. No one had to wait long to order drinks that were top notch. I ordered some of the house's specialty cocktails that were excellent - there bartenders know how to pour! Though most of us had already eaten, we ordered up a number of appetizers after a few rounds of drinks. The dates wrapped in bacon were perfect ( o hard crusty skins o the dates - they were warm and soft and melted in your mouth with a silky texture next to the smoky-saltiness of the bacon) We also got an anti-pasta platter that was nearly licked clean by the time we left. The kitchen dressed up the birthday cake and served it with a beautiful light fresh fruit garnish. They also found some birthday candles, which I had forgotten, and didn't embarrass the birthday boy by singing - his friends took care of that. We came from out of town to a place we had never been to have, what became, a fabulous night. The ambiance and staff at the Sapphire were a big part of that success!
Great for relaxing date. First you have to find the place...I drove by it for months before I even noticed it! This place is very warm and inviting. The decor is nice to look at, and it would be a great place for an intimate get together or date. The drinks were good, and they have sake served warm or cold. The bartender was very nice, and our glasses were never empty for long before someone would come by. I didn't try the food, but the ladies sitting next to us were having something that looked very delicious! I would come back here again.
Alluring atmosphere, delicious drinks, sterling service!.
Like the warm embrace of new love the ambiance of Sapphire immediately drew me in and set a relaxing tone for the evening. Even though the joint was jumping it some how maintained a sense of personable intimacy. The service was excellent, attentive and professional a quality that sadly many bars in Portland lack.
Regrettably I only had time for drinks and look forward to working my way though the menu upon subsequent visits.
Best Cheese Plate on Planet. Great ambience and amazing cheese plate!! Love the drinks and the servers always look gorgeous and glamorous. My dining partner had steak and said it was delicious. Definitely the best happy hour around. But go early and look amazing...it's worth it.
Unexpected find!. A friend took me here for the first time last night. Being tired of all the usual places, it was very exciting to find this place! Great drinks. The beer menu was a bit limited, although the offerings they had were good. The menu is mostly local and organic. I had the panzanella salad, which was delicious, and a good serving size. Menu is slightly limited as well, but all of us enjoyed our food. We went on a Wednesday night, and there weren't many people, so it was great conversation atmosphere. Good waitstaff. No complaints.
Not as advertised.
My wife and I went to the Sapphire Thursday evening and were disappointed.
First, when the waitress brought water it was without ice and was room temperture.
While we had no complaints with our drinks (she had chardonnay and I had an IPA) the atmosphere was hardly as advertised. Loud, echoy, and not exactly the place for quiet, private conversation.
The decor was early 21st century Craigs List, which is fine but Portland has plenty of bars with the same look and was about as "romantic" as an in store Starbucks.
We wanted appetizers but nothing on the menu sounded even slightly appealing. Salmon and corn cakes?Puh-leeze.
We were not there at Happy Hour and I could go back for that. Now that I know what to expect and not what is advertised.
Mmmmmmmm mulled wine!.
If you go, take someone you love because it still oozes with the "want to kiss" atmosphere. Intimate and snuggly. It boasts some Asian decorative accents like paper lantern shades on the lights - lots of dark red and black wood but the menu is more ecclectic. Organic too!
The cheese platter is amazing - plenty to indulge your senses - roasted garlic, figs, apples, grapes and bread complimet the baked brie, chevre goats cheese and crumbly blue and they throw in candied walnuts also. We shared the hanger steak and mashed sweet potatoes m m m m mmmmmm.
The wait staff were attentive without loitering. It was a "we struck gold" moment for us.
The mulled wine is the best we've tasted anywhere in the world!
This Hawthorne bar delivers style and value, combining nicely priced eats and drinks with funky Asian-Americana decor..
In Short
The lush red walls, Asian artwork and selected pieces of old-school American furniture combine for a well-heeled, East-meets-West feel. The room is large without feeling cavernous and there are both tables and a small bar. Features include simple but tasty wine choices and a hip vibe. The wine list offers nearly 30 selections, available by the glass or bottle. Small plates of food are available, including a tasty cheese and olive platter, salads, pastas and desserts.
Great customer service. My husband & I went to The Sapphire Hotel on Tuesday night and loved it. We sat at the bar & enjoyed watching the bartendar mix her wonderful concoctions. She obviously loves what she does & when I asked her about it she said "Especially this place. The clientele is great..." Our drinks were very yummy. We regret that we'd eaten at a couple places before ending up here because the salmon corn cakes looked right up my alley. The place was busy and everyone looked like they were having a good time. We're closer to 40 than 20 so were especially impressed by the diverse age group. Defintely neighborly feeling like other reviews have mentioned. I've already told several of my friends about our visit & we'll be back..to eat this time.
