Editorial Review for Sin Ju – by Ivy Manning and Rachel Bellacera
In Short
Two waterfalls, a sea of orchids and wood carvings accessorize the open dining room. The private tatami rooms, with secrecy screens and low-set tables, draw groups of chic Pearl scenesters and weekend casuals. The menu covers traditional Japanese fare: airy tempura arranged in a gravity-defying pyramid, bento boxes with mackerel, tonkatsu and teriyaki and steaming bowls of authentic udon noodles. Other traditional offerings include toro (tuna belly), sweet and crunchy abalone and salty tarako (pollack roe).

I really wanted to like this place. It has a neat atmoshpere. The interior decoration is nicely done, with some nice private rooms. Unfortunately, the sushi we had somehow fell flat. The portions were certainly generous enough, but the fish was bland, and the rolls/rice weren't tight. It was a struggle just to pick up the rolls in one piece. Service was alright. I expected better in a place like this.
Pros: Atmosphere
