This spot may be known for its rustic wood-fired loaves and intricate French pastries, but there's magic in the cookie jar, as well. Try the HUGE Valrhona chocolate chunk and hazelnut butter cookies.
Go for the unrivaled bread, stay for the ethereal pastries (or if it’s Monday night, the thin crust pizza!). Croissant lovers, cover your bases by ordering one of each—but if you feel that you should exercise self control (boo), pick the pain au chocolat, nobody in town does it better.
I couldn't pass up this beautiful peach tartlet and I'm so glad I didn't. It not only looked beautiful it tasted fresh and perfectly balanced. Although the lines seem long they move along quickly and the staff is friendly and personable. Grab a seat outside or next to one of their opened walls to create a delightful environment to start your morning.
Don't waste your time..... Unfortunately, this bakery is a disappointment. It is not the food that is the problem...it is the snooty staff that acts like they are doing you a favor when they serve you. It creates an air of unfriendliness and I will not be back. Plus, the sandwich we ordered....a half sandwich that is...was so small that it was only a few bites!! It was $8, which is about $4 over what it should be. I do not care for phony keep up with the jones' NW PDX types. It is Portland not Paris.
good crust on the pizza but BAD service.
had the monday night pizza three times. First time it was very good, almost great. Next time crust was dry or stale or something. Tonight they gave me the wrong pizza and the girl at the counter acted like i farted or something.
Hey babe just want my pizzza i paid for ok?
ken are you listening? Dont let your hard work be undone by lazy bad employees.
Excellent bread, great pastries, enjoy the staff.
This place is everything I love about Portland. It has funky staff, that are fun to talk to if you are around in late afternoon when they have time to breathe. From the tables you can watch the action as they bake away. There is a variety of bread from hearty and crusty to soft and chewy...something for everyone. Everyone of the pastries are awesome. The coffee is good, as well, from a local roaster. As I sit back and watch the people come and go, most have coffee and pastry in hand. My goodness, try a loaf of bread! The soups and sandwiches are good as well.
I read some of the comments in other posts (although they are a little dated) and it didn't seem like the same place. I think one is referring to the pizza location on the East side. This location only serves pizza on Monday evenings, and it's a pretty quaint, exclusively neighborhood experience on Mondays.
good food, bad service. Love the food, hate the workers, they've never been outlandishly rude, just not friendly or polite. The area is cramped but in the summer the windows are raised and its awesome. I've noticed that if I go in there in a less busy time, the staff is more enjoyable, along with the whole experience.
Used to be better. About a year and a half ago, there was some staff turnover at Ken's on NW 21st. The staff in general is not very friendly, but it was worth it for the food. My friend and I went to Ken's for about one year nearly two or three times a week. Now we hardly ever go. The Oregon croissants, for example, don't taste the same. Either they are overcooked (just had one that was slightly charred) or undercooked. We thought after so many months, the new staff would be better trained. Not so. After many dollars spent, we'll take our patronage elsewhere. Sorry, Ken's, we loved you once, but no more!
Rude staff. We have heard mixed reviews about Ken's but decided to try it the other night. We found the staff to be particularly unfriendly and not customer service oriented. We ordered one of the most expensive bottles of wine and were literally rushed to finish the bottle and leave the table. The hostess who was helping clear tables actually tried to take our filled wine glasses three times! When a place receives such mixed reviews it is time take a look at the inconsistencies in customer service. We will definitely give our money to Appiza Scholls who has excellent pizza and consistently great customer service.
Horrible Customer Service and the Food is not great, either !. I have never received such rude customer service. All we wanted was to enjoy a quick bite and some relaxing atmosphere. We were greeted with rude and rushed employees. We had never visited this location before and the staff expected us to know the menu and when we inquired about two of the items, they responded in a way that would chase anyone away from their establishment. The bakery items were extremely overpriced, too ! Walk the extra couple of blocks and go to Starbucks, instead.
very dissapointed. first of all, the pizza is not even in the same league as apizza scholls. everyone always complains that apizza scholls has too many rules, but if you pay attention, kens has more rules. you cannot even make your own pizza there. They forgot about us once and we waited over two hours. Last time we were there we were a party of six and they had automatically charged a gratuity. we did not notice and left a 20% tip and the waitstaff did not bother to point it out. They should have pointed that out.
GREAT SERVICE. The employees are so helpful and create such a wonderful atmosphere. Not to mention, very easy on the eyes!
Excellent. Small range of baked goods, made up for by their superb quality. The oregon croissant (or wahtever it is called), jammed with berries; the wonderful breads; the excellent macaroons. Great coffee. Excellent, fresh salads with good dressings. Roast beef sandwich is heavenly. This place would be a success in Paris.
