Portland >Wine Down
I love this place!. I came to this restaurant about a year and a half ago. It was my sisters graduation and birthday and I wanted to find a place with great food, great wine but still casual and fun. after searching through restaurants online for hours I came across this one and instantly loved it. Maybe it was the name, all I know is I made a reservation for 10 people and when we arrived they had pulled out tables and chairs to the sidewalk. It was great. The service was incredible, the food and wine even more so and the french press coffee was the best I've ever had (I ran a coffee shop for years so this was a big deal). Its been awhile now since Ive been back but thats just because Im an idiot for forgetting this little wonder exists. I plan on spending my birthday next month with all my friends and family at this place and I know it will be great. So to the person who wrote that ridiculous review, its obvious that you have no taste whatsoever. I love it!
Great new menu.
We stumbled upon this nice wine bar and restaurant and while looking at the posted menu were greeted by the owner. He told us about a brand new menu and handed us a printed version. We decided to partake and weren't disappointed. They had fantastic service. Josh knew so much about wine, and was very friendly. They also had a great musician playing an acoustic guitar who entertained everyone. My wife had Ahi that was great and I had the Lamb. Both were really tasty dinners.
I really dislike people who post such negative reviews on Citysearch. No one waits two hours to get their dinner. I'm sure if those previous reviews were from unhappy customers, you wouldn't have that type of experience now. We loved it.
Terrible!. Two of us went there one night and it was absolutely terrible. The only up side is that the service was alright. There is no way that we should have paid what we did!!!! The food took an hour and a half to come out and to say that it lacked flavor and originality is an understatement! The minute rice that was served with both the steak and the pork was so bad! I am sorry to insult minute rice because it was much worse than that. I am born and raised in and have been to a lot of restaurants in here and I will never recommend nor return to this one!
Perfect Valentine's place.
Valentine's is a big date for us and I wanted to do something especially romantic. We're now newlyweds! I found Wine Down of 28th and liked the reviews so called and made reservations.
We were warmly welcomed when we got to the restaurant and taken to a very private booth--complete with lit candle and a curtain.
The service, food and ambiance were glorious. I had the Tournados of Beef and she had the chicken. Our waiter recommended a bodacious cabernet blend (scrumpdiliumptious) and so began our feast. Green salad with roasted walnuts lightly dressed with a perfect balsamic mix. Our entrees were literally perfect. It wasn't the wine or the company, either. We are foodies and pretty tough. These were simply delicious dishes beautifully plated and expertly prepared.
We don't know what the desert was, exactly. But it was warm, dark chocolate laying in a bed of red wine and drizzled with caramel. Oh my God! I took my last swig of that incredible wine and washed down the last drips of that heavenly chocolate thingy.
Besides the lovely fireplace area and intimate table settings (candles everywhere), there were two guitar players whose music was quiet and romantic.
I don't think this is a great family place and I don't think I'd go there alone, either. When I was last in Paris, and alone, there were restaurants like this that I avoided simply because they were so darned romantic.
We believe this is probably the very best place for a date, a kiss, an intimate conversation and some absolutely delicious food and wine.
Excellent, excellent, excellent. Great Food! Great Service! Great Ambiance! Perfect for a romantic evening and the owner is just delightful. We love this place over and over again!
Sophisticated Yet Casual - LOVED IT. The other day, my wife happened upon this charming restaurant and spent an hour or so enjoying a glass of wine and talking with some of the patrons and the bartender. She, of course, told me about it when she came home. So this evening we decided to try it for dinner. I must say that while my wife is quite a connoisseur of gourmet eating establishments, my tastes tend to be a bit less sophisticated. Wine Down on 28th was the perfect choice. My wife had a glass of sangria and we started with a cheese tray. I don't know what kinds of cheeses there were, but I liked them. For our entree, my wife ordered the Adobe Marinated Pork Loin with citrus demi-glaze and chili-lime mojo and sliced avocado. Our waiter (who was PERFECT) recommended it, and advised us that it was a bit spicy. My wife did think it was extremely flavorful, but not spicy in a "hot" kind of way. I ordered the Ribeye, but started with some soup. Like I said, I'm not very adventurous, but the soup was... get this... antelope barley soup! It was really good! I imagined myself being a lion on the Serengeti while I ate it. The ribeye was fantastic. It was served with a demi-glaze (some sort of tasty gravy-like substance) and an ample portion of garlic mashed potatoes. Mmmm-Mmmm. Loved it. I mentioned this earlier, but want to re-iterate how great the service was. When we walked in, the bartender and several others remembered my wife (by name) from earlier in the week. We sat down and were immediately served beverages and told of some of the choices. Then, the waiter went away leaving us to talk and enjoy the spectacular ambiance and great music (live, classical guitar). At one point, the owner came to our table to make certain we were enjoying ourselves and that everything was as we wanted it to be. I don't often say this about the fancy places my wife chooses - but I liked this place a lot. I will return... sooner than later.
Romantic, Casual, Great Food, Amazing Service.
My husband and I went for the first time this week and all I can say is..I wish we had found this place sooner! What a wonderful experience!
The ambience here is the perfect combination of tasteful and romantic, yet casual at the same time (pure Portland vibe). We were greeted warmly at the door, and seated immediately. Our server Adrian was knowlegeable, attentive without hovering, and the food arrived in a timely but not rushed pace. The acoustic guitar player and vocalist entertaining us during dinner were pleasant, and added to the subtle romantic mood.
The wine list is impressive but not overwhelming, and the menu had some interesting selections. We had wonderful appetizers (the stuffed portebello mushrooms were divine) and for dinner had one of their delicious and simple pasta selections. Dessert was equally wonderful (mmmmmm, "death by chocolate")with lava hot coffee.
The warm "thank you" from who appeared to be the owner/manager on our way out, was equally sincere.
All in all, we were made to feel very welcome, the service was top notch, had a wonderful meal, and left feeling like we got great value for our money.
We will certainly be back very SOON.
Poor food and service. Last night couple of friends and I visited this establishment. Got there at around 7pm, placed an order for our food around 7:30pm. One hour later finally we received our food. I ordered Ahi Tuna, the fish was completely dry, it was like eating rubber. My friends had similar unpleasant experiences with their dishes, chicken and stake. We voiced our displeasure to restaurant owner he was very apologetic however still making excuses for his chef, saying that he was to busy and may have overlooked our food. To add an insult to injury, they added 20% gratuity to the bill without our request, I guess they were worried we will not leave any tip because of complaints. There was only 5 of as there and the menu says that they only add 18% gratuity to groups 6 or more. We did not want to make anymore of the fuss about this issue so we just left the money and took off. The place is complete rip off, food is really bad. I don't recommend the place.
Great wine list and steak. This is a guaranteed spot for a local dinner. There is always good music and the servers bend over backwards to keep you happy.
We went there last Friday night and were AMAZED by the food and service. We are always on the lookout for new dishes and were surprised by the simple yet sophisticated dishes being offered here. The scallops were delicate in texture and also complex in flavors. It is a must have when trying one of the appetizers. The chicken pate is made by hand and is one of the most creamiest butter-like pates I've ever had (including pates in Paris).
The atmosphere is romantic and casual, giving you both privacy as well as casual dining. The live music sets the mood while not being too distracting. This is an ideal place for people who are looking for a nice romantic dinner or just want to relax with some friends. The lighting sets the mood quite nicely.
The atmosphere and the food was EXCELLENT but what truly amazed us, was the service. Our server Adrian (sp?) was PHENOMENAL! During our dinner, he made us feel welcomed and ensured that all of our needs were taken care of. He did not carelessly appear at times when we wanted to be alone in our conversations. All this wonderful service with big smile! Our food came out in perfect order and timing. We did not feel rushed to finish our dinner but were able to relax and enjoy the whole experience. The wine suggestions from Adrian was perfect, so be adventurous and try something new.
We were also delighted to have Stuart come to our table and greet us. This made us feel more like friends then another customer. It's refreshing to be able to just talk with the owner of the establishment instead of dining at a place where 95% of the time you don't even know who the owner is.
So come down for the great food and be prepared to be blown away by the service. This place is not for people who want to be seen but rather by people who are looking for great food and atmosphere. If you're looking for a romantic place to take your date on, this is the place to go.
