What Our Expert Scouts Say

Jam On Hawthorne
April 30, 2013

You'll get the authentic Portland brunch experience at this cute corner cafe, giant lines and all. Brunch fare is reliable, portions are large, and the vibe is upbeat--especially when you order the pork belly mac n cheese or Sweet Jesus--a happy mess of a fried chicken waffle sandwich drenched in bacon, cheese, and maple mayo. Yes, maple mayo.

To avoid the line at this a.m. hot spot, wake up a bit early! Huge portions, epic bloody marys, housemade chai, & lots of dietary restriction-friendly options without the wait (before 9 am).

Delicious. Large portions of food. Recommend the blueberry chai vegan pancake (I'm not even vegan). Sometimes long wait.

Loved the breakfast. hated the. Loved the breakfast. hated the wait!

Food wonderful and reasonable, served warm and efficently. But the waiting for breakfast is truly something new for me i will just have to get used to it since i am here to stay.

great location - good food. I like the area, the food was good... they were super busy, so the service was a little slow, but they were personable and they were swamped with people (for a reason), but I was in no hurry, so I have no complaints. Some people are so critical, or inpatient. If I was in a hurry... I wouldn't go here because this is the place you can be in and out of in a hurry. C'mon people!

The Worst Breakfast in Portland. JAM should really be named JOKE...

Let's start with the newly expanded space: poor spatial planning and the floors were filthy.

We sat at the bar and the bartender was horrendous. It took her 10 minutes to clean the surface, then even more time to give us menus. We had to ask for cutlery, butter and re-fills for coffee and soda (although she was standing right in front of us). In fact, there wasn't even any Jam (to be had with our toast)!

Our food was bland. The ketchup tasted like it was fermented and I wonder if it was left over from the previous restaurant owners. My husband ordered a "spicy sausage" and he said it tasted like a hot dog.

LOVE this place!. This is one of my most favorite places for breakfast. As with most Portland breakfast joints, you can enjoy your stumptown coffee while you wait for a table, so the wait is never that bad.

The thing on the menu I can't stop ordering is a Create-Your-Own Hasbrown stack... My combo: hasbrowns, black beans, cheddar, 2 eggs, and tomatoes. YUM.

I've been here countless times, and never had bad service, or a bad breakfast.

overrated. ... after waiting almost an hour while, and watching empty tables sit unattended, we sat down to a complete waste of $35. My husband and I were both disappointed in our breakfasts, and after I had to send my eggs back for being raw (over easy means completely raw apparently) I was told "for future reference over easy....blah blah blah" REALLY? geez, I'm sorry I don't prefer salmonella for breakfast OR a snotty waitress who could care less about us ever coming back or recommending the joint. Worst service ever, bland food, bland drinks, and besides the art nothing worth the trip, shoulda just went to the trusty Cricket....

Great Pancakes. Great breakfast options. Definitely worth the wait, if there's a wait. I love that they have coffee outside rain or shine for you while you're waiting for a table.

The chai pancakes or the lemon ricotta pancakes are both to die for. And while you're at it, get yourself a bloody mary. mmmmm

BEST PLACE FOR KIDS. They have sippy cups, wind up toys, all the usual "keep that kiddo busy" necessities it is impressive. They have an excellent kid menu and seem to actually enjoy children. I have recommended this place to all my mommas and daddies in my life. Seriously, give it a try, you will not be disappointed.

fantastic food, charming service. Every time I go to breakfast here I'm thrilled with whatever I order. The breakfast cocktail menu is vast and tasty. I've always had stellar service, friendly and prompt. The people watching is always damn good too as a little added bonus.

yummy, every single time. I've been going to Jam about 3 years, usually a couple of times per month. I've never, not a once, had a bad experience. Yes, there can be a bit of a wait, esp. on weekend mornings. But, it is a SE Portland, hole in the wall breakfast joint. That's what you get on a a weekend morning! But there is yummy Stumptown coffee available to sip upon while you wait. Or if you're starving you can run across the street and grab some bread at GC or a piece of fruit at UP's. Jam has some pretty unique dishes, things that you're not going to find anywhere else in Portland. My faves: Ty's Big Breakfast, The Other One (wrap), the crazy delicious berry Broiche French Toast, and the Hammer scramble. Service has always been really good, in comparision to service at other SE PDX breakfast establishments. Friendly, attentive and always givin us extras if we ask (toast, salsa, etc). I still haven't made it for dinner, but I can imagine tis just as yummy.
