The best organic vegan soup (vegan Tom Kah Ga) i've had in a long time! Very impressive! Nice atmosphere and worth the wait. The "body armor" tea was absolutely fantastic! Definitely going back for more.
Food Poisoning.
I like to give people the benefit of the doubt. I've working in the restaurant biz for many years and know it can be a difficult job. Our waiter was not very familiar with the menu. Service was slooooowww and the place was barely half full. The meal I ordered was best described as "meh". Not good, not horrible but bad enough to put me in the emergency room with food poisoning. When I called to let the manager know, she basically disregarded me saying I had an 'upset stomach'. Um, NO. I don't think so sister. It would have behooved them to at least act concerned but I guess not.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Typhoon Restaraunt, Gresham, Oregon. Ate there in may for dinner. Very good Pad Thai. Tom Kah Ga soup was missing main ingredient of onions. Rectified. Had to wait quite some time for a server to come and help us . Bartender took our original order, but he was busy mixing drinks at the bar while we we were parched. Came back this month and got a:" To go" order of Tofu Pad Thai. No eating utensils, forgot my 2 peanut sauces. Got home, and no lime included in box. Noodles were old, cool and clumped together. Tofu were tiny diced cubes of white tofu tossed onto the top of one corner of the noodles! Not stir fried in. Got the end of the night food? Called and left a mssg for the Manager as no one was available to pick up their phone. 2 weeks went by. NO ONE returned my call. I got him when i called back last week. He was pleasant . Acknowledged he got my mssg. But never apologized for not calling me back. Said to come in and he would replace it. Thought if i ate there again , it would be better. The Vegetable Pad Thai chicken with tofu was over powering . You could smell strong fish sauce before you ate it. I am not a fan of fish sauce. The stir fried Cabbage? Was dirty with black dirt in it, no one washed it off before cooking with it. Other pieces were brown from aging.(waste). I pushed it aside. I could not eat it. When yet another wait person came by i showed it to him and he agreed it was not OK to serve it and said we will get you another one. I was ready to leave. He offered to pack the Tom Ka Ga soup to go. I ordered a large bowl for me and another family member. I got it home, family member dug in, and was so upset because he got a mouthful , a fistful of light brown hair in his soup. He was so disgusted we tossed it. I received an email from the co and replied about this last poor food quality control in the kitchen. No response. Today, i called the rest and spoke to the manager AGAIN. He said he had forwarded my comments to the headquarters. He was not happy with me. I asked if he would replace one bowl of soup for my family member, and he said do NOT order from anyone else here. They do not know how to take orders. You can only order from me when i am there . He made me feel like i was the problem. How is poor quality veggies and hair in the plastic to go container our fault? That hair was NOT in the soup when i sat at the table and drank from the large bowl! Somewhere between the table and kitchen something went wrong. Very wrong. He also insisted that no one in his employ has brown hair. Only black hair. Well we are both blonds. Not my hair either. That is not OK....
Excellent food.... The Typhoon is Gresham is the best resturant in town. Don't know what I'd do w/ out them. The veggies are always fresh, and good quality. The curry sauces are unbeatable, every dish is a real treat! The service is always 5 star! The prices are reasonable, so I can go as often as I like.
Great Place for a 1st Date or 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th....
Typhoon probably holds the trendiest ambiance in Gresham! It has an urban-asian feel w/ bold colors, artifacts & art, perfect lighting (including candles), and comfy booths.
They serve flavorful food in creative presentations. Many veggie options. Great place for veggie lovers! My favorite dish is the Buddha's Feast accompanied by Jasmine rice. The Pad Thai is really good too! The perfect complement to any dish is the homemade coconut ice cream for dessert! It's so refreshing! Yum!
For all you tea lovers, they offer a unique variety of rare teas from Thailand. I have not tried the teas due to $, but I look forward to sampling a cup sometime. Maybe next time I meet a friend for coffee/tea, we'll stop into Typhoon for a specialty tea and dessert!
Sorry Customer Service.
I rarely get riled up enough to rant about a restaurant, but Typhoon pushed me over the edge tonight. I called in a to-go order (bags of gold appetizer and 1 order of yellow curry chicken.) I arrived to pick it up and stood at the counter holding my squirming daughter for a good 10 minutes before anyone even acknowledged my existence. A party of 2 was seated, a party of two placed a to-go order, the hostess was at the counter the ENTIRE time, the manager even came up! I work in customer service myself, and in my opinion, it only takes a minute to say to a waiting customer,"I'll be with you in just a moment." Finally, it was one of the other patrons that said to the manager,"She is just picking up a to-go order and has been waiting for quite a while." The manager was perfectly pleasant but didn't offer an apology for my wait.
Basically, I love the food at Typhoon (namely the yellow curry and pad thai) but it is overpriced (they charge like $4 just so you can have rice with a dish that is supposed to come with it) and the service is subpar.
Hi,
I am extremely sorry about your service at Typhoon! Gresham. I hope you will come try us again, for this is very unlike our customer service.

Great food, bad for takeout. Great food - not great for takeout. Like the other reviewers, we agreed that the portions were not very generous. In addition, we didn't realize that they didn't include rice until we got home. When we called to inquire, we were told by a very rude man that rice was extra...who doesn't eat Thai food with rice?!? I have eaten at other Typhoons in the past and have had great experiences (including rice), but this will not go on my takeout speed dial!
This place was GREAT!.
Our first experience at Typhoon and WOW? we loved it! We've heard good things about them from several friends and had finally decided to give it a try. And on our 21st anniversary! Our waiter, Shane took the time to explain their menu and helped us understand their ?star? levels of spicy. We tried the Pumpkin soup as a starter and shared a bowl. Two sips in and I wanted my own bowl? no sharing this one! I went with the Stir Fry, Pepper Corn Sirloin and choose two stars. It was perfectly prepared and a good size portion. I wished I?d of went with three stars but it was plenty spicy and a place to start. My sweetie went for the Cashew Chicken and again a generous portion and quickly served. Being our anniversary, the Manager stopped by with the dessert menu and offered us one. We had a interesting discussion about Typhoon and how our experience was so far?
We had a great discussion with Shane, our waiter, again about Typhoon and he explained some of their company culture and how they typically share a meal with fellow employees during a down period in the afternoons. It was obvious that he was proud to work their and had great things to say about his fellow employees. It?s a family culture that he explained came from the top down. He also explained the dessert menu and we shared the Fried Bananas with Chocolate. It was battered in their Tempura and Coconut sprinkles? I was already stuffed but somehow managed to not leave a crumb!
I would highly recommend them to family and friends and we will look forward to our next visit!
Yummy Thai Food in Gresham. We've eaten at the Gresham & downtown Portland Typhoon locations several times over several years and have never been disappointed. We always share a few starters and a noodle dish as well as pad thai. Their calamari, string beans and nibbler platter are all wonderful. The chefs will cook to order the level of spice you want on your food, so don't hold back if something is listed as very spicy or mild. A couple of other reviewers gave mediocre ratings, I say, call the manager and tell them about your experience and give them another shout. It could be you visited Typhoon on an off day. Try them again, you won't be disappointed.
Way overpriced. Mediocre food..
Opened the meal with the "Nibbler Platter" to sample the appetizers without breaking the bank. This consisted of two greasy and bland chicken satay skewers next to two lemon grass pork skewers that were completely indistinguishable from the chicken. Also included was a below-average veggie spring roll cut in half that was dripping oil from the fryer. The high points were the fairly tasty "Bag of Gold", but these were also saturated in oil. The low points: Kra-thong ton - room temperature flavorless crumbles in a pastry cup, and the fried wontons were just gross - room temperature meat mash in greasy wonton. The sauces were not bad, but not interesting either. Cost for a plate of "blah" food: $14.95, not including tip.
Only one entree to review, the "Death by Asparagus". This was rated ***, or "Yee-haw" spicy according to Typhoon!. It was $12.95 for 6 shrimp with asparagus in sauce, and the total portion size was about half of what you would expect in any other decent Thai restaurant. The garnishes were carved with a high degree of skill - I wish they had saved some labor expense and added more asparagus or shrimp to my meal. It was fairly well balanced as far as the flavors, although this was FAR from spicy. I was shocked at how unimpressive the heat level was. If that is as hot as they offer, that is just pitiful!
They have a large tea selection, but no "house" tea. If you want tea with your meal, be prepared to pony up $5.95. Cocktails are on the expensive side, especially for Gresham, unremarkable wine list.
Service was mediocre, given the high staff to diner ratio, and several different faces delivered the food over the course of the meal.
I could have gorged myself on delicious, spicy, and interesting offerings at Halo Thai rather than go home still hungry and feeling ripped off.
