What People Are Saying About Vegetarian House

In Short – Situated near the entrance of the Chinatown gates, this haven for vegetarians and vegans does brisk business. Bike messengers rub elbows with suit-and-ties at the popular lunchtime buffet, while dinnertime is less crowded. The decor is strictly Communist-era China, with fluorescent lighting and antiseptic green walls. The menu features dishes like tofu "hush puppies" in a heavy, tangy sauce and mu shu "beef" with loads of cloud-ear mushrooms and shredded vegetables.
yummy!

The prices have gone up and it makes me sad, however, it's still worth it. It's basically your average Chinese restaurant, without the help of dead animals. Said that, it's not "healthy", I've known people to come in and not like Vegetarian House because they expected "healthy" dishes. So not healthy, just pure yummy! I've taken a meat eating friend who actually forgot that her chicken chow mien was meat free!
- Pros: no dead animals
I dream of orange chicken

Omg omg omg. Vegetarian House is quite possibly the greatest Chinese restaurant in Oregon. I've been dining with them for close to 4 years now and I don't plan to stop any time soon. My favorite dish is the orange "chicken", followed closely by the tofu in brown sauce (don't be scared by the name, the sauce is brown, but it's delicious!) The prices can be cheap depending on what you get. Most plates are between $8 and $10, but the more exotic "meats" ("fish", "squid", etc.) are at the higher end, $13-$15. The only things I would say that are bad about the Vegetarian House is the location, atmosphere, and some of the wait staff. But in all honesty, I think those are the reasons it's so weird and wonderful. PS. Everything is vegan too, except fortune cookies.
- Pros: Orange chicken, corn and tofu chowder, chicken chow mein
- Cons: Could be hard to find parking on the weekends, not enough water refils
Authentic Chinese food that I can actually eat!

YAY! I love this place, I also would eat there everyday if I could. It's conveniently located right off of burnside, and close to lots of great shops. My boyfriend and I often make a date out of Powell's books, then vegetarian house and saint cupcake for dessert. I would highly recommend the lemon 'chicken' or the cashew 'chicken' dishes. Great spring rolls too. I wouldn't recommend any of the fake seafood, but I do know people who like it, so it's just a matter of taste.
- Pros: Well prepared tofu and soy meat, attentive staff, good location
- Cons: none i can think of.
