More fun to browse than pay their. With an inspiring selection to browse and buy, Pistils offers an outdoorsy break on Mississippi. Try to pet the chickens.

Beautiful house plants, succulents, huge variety of air plants and the most beautiful terrariums.

In the market for succulents or air plants on the cheap? This is your go-to nursery. A small selection of books and local art available.
Incredible nursery. There are some amazing plants I've never seen and in the spring they have baby chicks and you can always visit the clucking chickens out back. This is definitely a good decorative plant store.
Urban nursery contrasts big-box garden centers.. This Mississippi neighborhood nursery stands out for more than its minty green and burnt orange facade. For urban homesteaders, it’s a place to be inspired by the rustic setting and launch pet projects, say, worm composting or rearing baby chickens. In the cozy, wood-floored shop, the owners peddle their passions, a collection of house plants, terrariums, garden tools, chicken-keeping supplies and, occasionally, fluffy baby chicks. Out back, a gravel lined-lot serves as the outdoor nursery where shoppers select vegetable starts, citrus trees and ornamentals while the resident chickens run underfoot.
Pistil Poor Customer Service. As an avid gardener, I have three times visited Pistils Nursery in Mississippi Street attempting to purchase plants, and many of them, but on each occasion have been unsuccessful due to the flip and arrogant manner of the staff. Twice, I was the only customer on the premises, but could not get the attention of the two or three staff members who were engaged in a rabid gossip session, stopping just long enough to give me a quick and nasty up-and-down glance. I am only writing now because I recently had a conversation with two of my neighbors, both of whom had the same experience when attempting to make a purchase at Pistils. Is our money not attractive enough for you? If you have a dress code, or an age limit, perhaps you could post a sign on the door mentioning this fact so that future gardeners might avoid the miserable experience of shopping at your establishment. Why are you even open if you are not actually in the business of selling anything? Portland has a reputation for poor customer service, but Pistils is the worst I have yet encountered. Love the chickens, but unless you have a masochistic desire to be treated like, er, dirt, there are many other small independently-run nurseries in Portland that are infinitely more welcoming.
best terrariums!.
Pistils is the shop I do all my wedding shopping at, they have the coolest terrarium! Also if anything dies in the terrarium they will replace the plant, so its the gift that keeps on giving.
I love this store for many reasons but above all I keep shopping here because the staff is so nice and helpful!
We Love Pistils!. For people like me and many of my close friends who are into gardening, chicken keeping, composting with worms -- and frankly anything that re-thinks the gluttonous, lazy conventions that have made a lot of us feel oddly apart from nature, Pistils is such a breath of fresh air. Thank you, Pistils for being there for us!
We got HIMS not HENS....
I was interested in having chickens and a friend told me about Pistils. I went in a couple of times before to talk to the women there and like the comment below me had less than attentive service (yes, the woman in the glasses is SUPER NICE!!)
I still did get my chicks from them and was assured that they were hens( we picked up 4 babies). About 2 months later we see that they have all turned out to be ROOSTERS.. I called Pistils several time to no avail, did not return my calls.. Just plain bad business and just beware when purchasing your chicks that you are getting HENS not HIMS...
Great Location, but Mediocre Customer Service. If this store wasn't so close to my house I wouldn't go here. The customer service varies greatly on a day to day basis. The women in the dark rimmed glasses with short hair is by far the most helpful, beyond that the employees and even owner have a barista-like attitude when it comes to asking questions or 'interrupting' their work. I'm amazed when an employee is not barricaded behind the register/table. The selection of the plants is better than an average box store or Fred Meyers. I'd say this would be a "while I'm passing by" type shop that is an after thought if I'm grabbing lunch or a video. Although I do love the chickens. They are friendly!
Editorial Review. Quaint flower nursery offers plants and designs landscaping, providing supplies to maintain an eco-friendly environment.
Start your own vermicompost!. I only travelled to this nursery because I saw at the Green Homes and Garden Expo that they use and sell Red Wigglers (earthworms used in worm bins). And, I'm so glad that I did! The nursery itself is gorgeous. Cool building, tons of healthy plants, baby bantam chickens pecking away indoors, and full grown ones keeping the pest population low outside.
