awesome place. i love hedge house, i try to get over there as often as i can!
great on a sunny day.. service is always good, as the beer is too. five stars for those. maybe two and a half or three stars for the food, not bad at all, just not good enough to say, man! that was good! (for my spoiled portland mouth). if anything, get the burger. i like the setting a lot, and have been there probably five times- great place for a sunny day- couldn't find a better patio in that neighborhood when beer and sun is what you need!
Family Night Out.
Last Saturday night (April 24, 2010). Our group of four adults and four children (a seven year old, a four year old and two two year olds (yes, two of them…)) descended on The Hedge House for a much needed night out.
We were seated and had our drinks almost immediately. Our server, Lee Anna, was attentive and cheerful during our entire meal (and almost had us convinced us to stay for one more drink at the end, but the spouses and kids were already outside running around the lawn…). She double-checked when we were ordering and made sure the children all had food and drinks ordered for them, and was very willing to order a side of pork for one of the girls who didn’t like any of the kid’s options. Faced with a question of whether bar could create a Black and Tan, Lee Anna confidently responded that she could work something up and did. The Nacho appetizer, the pulled pork and P.A.B.S.T. sandwiches were very good and the beers were even better. The kid’s dinners even came out early, a big win for any family night out.
Talking with another family while the kids worked off dinner in the yard and they told us they had found The Hedge House exactly the same way we had; faced with a long wait at another restaurant, they decided to try The Hedge House and had ended up making it their regular dinner night out.
Everybody in our group had a great time and we are planning on trying the rest of the tasting rooms, but we will definitely be back to The Hedge House for another dinner.
Great place to catch a Steelers game!!!. I travel often and have been to Steelers bars in several states as well as Brussels Belgium. The Hedge House is high on my list. My wife and I had a great day on the deck watching the 2009 opener with wonderful people, good food and great Lompoc (own label) beers. Many of the people were regulars and huge fans, from Jerry the owner to Papa Paul making sure that everyone had a Terrible Towel. Chris and Deb at/near our table were a pleasure to be with as well. We had a great time. Make sure that you get there a little early and are prepared for being on the covered deck or beside it in the uncovered area. We were there on a sunny and warm day. Go Steelers!!!
Lame.
If you're looking for overpriced, tasteless, heavy food served by rude people in a dirty atmosphere, this is the place!
My husband and I recently moved into the neighborhood, a few blocks from Hedge House. We're long time Portlanders and eat out once or twice a week. I'd eaten at Hedge House once before and found the food, atmosphere, and staff mediocre, but they had only just opened so I thought maybe they were just getting their act together.
Last week, we decided to give them another try. We asked the waitress if we could sit outside. Be warned, the pretty patio is likely not where you'll sit. There is the "Upper Deck", where we were routed to past the nice open tables. It is dark and loud and there was food under our table. I immediately stepped my sandal into a big glob of what I hope was mustard. Other patrons were then routed from the Upper Deck to the pretty patio, but we were never asked if we wanted that option.
Our waitress, a disheveled woman with short hair and huge glasses, was abrupt, unhelpful, and rude throughout the entire meal. We ordered nachos and beers to start. The nachos were good, the one good thing about the night. For our entrees we chose the pulled pork sandwich and the philly cheesesteak. Alas, there is not a burger on the menu. The pulled pork was tasteless. The cheesesteak was tough and gamy, tasting the way a wet dog smells. Perhaps I've been spoiled by the philly cheesesteak at Foti's, but this was inedible. I made my way through1/3 of the sandwich and then pushed it aside, leaving most of the Ruffles untouched, as well (no fries, but Ruffles). The waitress cleared my plate, not asking if it was unsatisfactory. Sometimes you're just not in the mood to complain, so you pay your bill and leave, vowing never to return.
Whenever we walk by, there are people eating, sometimes even waiting for a table. The Hedge House must have something, if they're all waiting, right? Or do that many people just have low standards?
Warning: Read before going.
Important: There is a sign on the back wall. It is hard to see from the door or the patio, but it is important. It says that this is not one of your McMenamins where you can just take any seat. You must get permission to sit, even if the place is empty.
And don't ask the dishwasher for permission to sit. Only the waitress can grant that. If you ask the dishwasher, and he says go right ahead, the waitress will get angry at you anyway.
And don't confuse the dishwasher with a bartender, just because he's putting glasses behind the bar when he gives that permission. The waitress will inform you that there is no bartender, and assume that you are lying. After all, it is the waitresses job to call her customers liars if they mistake a dishwasher for a bartender and say, for instance, but the bartender said it is fine, just sit anywhere.
And when the waitress accuses you of lying, don't take it personally. If you insist that you weren't lying, that if there is no bartender, then there was somebody behond the bar, and that you feel she is being rude, she will refuse to serve you.
Yes, that's right. You can be refused service in the Hedge House merely for sitting where the dishwasher says you can sit, simply because the waitress considers it rude to sit without her own permission, and rude to imply that someone said you can sit, and rude to respond to her insults by insisting that you aren't lying.
This is all very important, if you wish to eat and drink at the Hedge House.
Better yet, skip the place. Anyone who lets their waitress behave like that shouldn't get your business.
stop complaining!. It is so annoying when I ask my friends to meet me somewhere. They look up the place on city search and there are a bunch of losers with way to much time on their hands complaining about my favorite hang-out. Honestly I don't care if they don't come back but I love this place. Anyone else that loves it as much as I do- should speak out. Good beer, food, service!
Terrific, Great, Wonderful...Excellent.
A group of Co workers and I try out new places every payday for lunch. The idea is to try a new place that none of us have tried before.
It was my week to choose and I chose Hedge House...What a great choice. We all agreed it was wonderful. Of course no beer for lunch while working but I would go back after work. Very quaint small place. For lunch it was perfect. I can see how they would fill up fast though at night or on a Saturday or Sunday, or Tuesday pint night.
I did not hear a complaint from anyone. 5 of us had the Broccoli Cheddar soup and a sandwich of some sort. One in our group had fruit with his sandwich. The sandwiches were hearty and very tasty. The Reuben was packed full of meat and sauerkraut and the bacon on the, bacon avocado sandwich was perfectly crisp, all the bread looked fresh.
I had to change it up a bit for a low carb option and they were very accommodating. I would say the only negative would be they were a tad slow with the meal but there were 6 of us at the table so I think that is to be expected.
The waiter was superb and had no troubles allowing us to split the check 6 ways. (Some of the restaurants we have gone to for our payday lunch refuse to split the check)
Over all I (we) Highly recommend it.
Avoid at all cost. I wish I had read the reviews before going to Hedge House. Servicve was horrible. It took 30 minutes to get chips and salsa, and then an additional 45 minuites to get a sandwich. The food was very mediorce. The sandwiches at Safeway are a much better choice for lunch. The servers were not friendly or helpful at all. Also not only were the servers in dirty clothes, the restaurant itself is filthy! There are so many better places in Portland, we will never eat at Hedge House again. NO STARS!
Not So Good. The thing is, LOMPOC beer really isn't that good. It's never the same. Always flat or over foamy. And don't even think you'll get anything related to "service" at any one of their places.
