Editorial Review for Urban Fondue – by Annamaria Pardini

In Short
A soaring wall of red swirling abstract art, offset by a softly lit black ceiling and shimmering golden carpet set a mood of relaxed opulence at this cozy eatery. High-backed ultra-suede booths and down-stuffed chairs host urban sophisticates and date-night duos. Mix-and-match entrees include a choice of meat, cooking broth and dipping sauces. Sweeten the palate with the ice cold cheesecake chunks and Grand Marnier-infused strawberries swirled in a rich chocolate fondue.

My husband and I recently dined at Urban Fondue for our anniversary on a recommendation and we thoroughly enjoyed our experience. The restaurant is intimate and comfortable. We ordered a martini from their long list... I had the pear martini and it was like a fresh pear in a glass, it was so delicious. My husband order a martini with fresh muddled blueberry and rum and he liked it so much he ordered two! We shared the smoked cheddar fondue and added grilled asparagus to the order... WOW! the fondue was probably the best I had ever had and the asparagus was grilled perfectly. Next we ordered chicken and shrimp and cooked it in their seasoned broth. We had such a great time dipping our food in the many dipping sauces they served. They also provide these great little timers to help you cook your food. For dessert we shared the black forest chocolate fondue. The plate of dipping items were so beautiful I took a picture of it before we jumped in. We dipped poundcake, cheesecake, COOKIE DOUGH YUM!, fresh raspberries and apricots into the chocolate, dessert was truly a heavenly experience. I undertand that everything Urban Fondue serves is freshly made, no processed cheeses or cookie cutter recipes and you can really tell. I also have to mention how wonderful our server was. She was available when we needed her, but gave us space during the time we dipped our meat in broth. I also love the fact that they serve fondue the old fashioned way... no built into the table electric burners. Dining is much like the way the Swiss dined, which was over an open flame. My husband and I HIGHLY recommed this wonderful establishment for any special occassion. And the best part is I wrote a letter to the managers of Urban Fondue sharing with them our wonderful experience and they invited us back again with a generous gift certificate as an anniversary gift. We plan to take our best friends from Europe to dinner here when they visit us this winter. I am looking forward to it!

A group of 6 of us has gift certificates to Urban and though we would all go at the same time. We had high hopes that where in now way meet. The service was along the lines of a fast food restaurant, where they take your order and then walk away. The server broke a champagne glass on one of us, while trying to take to many glasses from the table at once, in her hand. Glass was found on all 6 of us, on the floor and chair. So we had to get new coffee's, ask for the table to be complete wiped down, and new napkins. The floor where the glass broke was never vacuumed up, nor did they offer to give my friend a new chair to sit on. Where was not compensation for the broken glass on our bill. The veggie’s where cut way before we ever made it to the restaurant. The food was not worth the cost. When we went to use the gift certificates we where told we could only use one of the three we had, even though we where all paying separately. The gift certificates did not say you couldn't use them with other certificates, so we used one, gave one away to another table, and the third went home with one of the couples. This will not be a restaurant that we will be going back to at all. I would not recommend it to anyone. Portland has amazing places to eat, and this one is not on that list. If you are looking for a great place for cheese/chocolate fondue, where the servers take care of you, this is not the restaurant for you.

Cons: Hard to find parking, staff was not helpful
