I love cheese. I love bread. I love dipping breads and all other delicious foods into cheese. Urban Fondue is no joke. Highly recommend the ruby port and if you're going to do fondue - you also must partake in the chocolate fondue. It comes with an assortment of tasty treats - including cheesecake and cookie dough to name a few!
Love, love love them! Anybody who can turn goat cheese into something I crave deserves an award!
Poor service and over billed.. This was are first time eating here and im sorry to say it will be the last. The service was very slow. We ordered drink's before dinner (which was still happy hour) and got billed full price and they also tried to change us for more drinks than we ordered. While ordering we were not given a very good explanation of how things went,being are first time there. Again when the food came out there was very little explaining about the seven sauce's and what was in each fondue pot. When it came time for our party to leave we had the waiter split up our bill. We paid and signed for our bill only to get home and find out the next day that we were billed for some of the other party members food. We called and talked to the manager the next day who was very rude and unhelpful. After several calls that day he finally called back and said he found their mistake and that he would correct it. It's been four days and it is still not resolved. After reading other reviews this seem to be a common occurrence. Two thumbs down.
Prepare for the worst dining experience EVER!.
HORRIBLE service! Waited over an hour for our food... which, wouldn't have been so bad, except all that we ordered was some fondue, and a couple of drinks. When we arrived, most of our party was already there and had been served. About 15 minutes went by, and a few more members of our party arrived, and the waiter (finally) decided to grace us with his presence. He then proceeded to take the newcomers orders before ours...hello! @ this point we had been waiting over 25 minutes without even a drink offered to us, while everyone else who had arrived earlier was noshing away! BAD SERVICE! To make matters worse, the newbies to our table had ordered a big spread... which they promptly received, while we waited an additional 20 min. for our fondue pot. We were never offered a refill on our drinks, and I was over charged for drinks that I had never ordered. I brought this to the server's attention, and was given an updated receipt. The problem? I checked my bank account online... GUESS WHAT!? I was billed the original amount.
Another BUYER BEWARE: If you are in a group... gratuity is included... which in my opinion, a gratuity is something to be EARNED for providing exceptional service, and should not be an included fee. I tip extremely well (25% +) if I feel that I received even just good service, because I realize that they have other tables to attend to. In this situation, that was definitely not the case- I have been to restaurants far more packed and received some of the best service ever. Being busy is not an excuse for neglecting your job- especially if it is a party of over 10 people and you have plenty of help from other servers. I will never be returning to Urban Fondue ever again. Thank you URBAN FONDUE for the WORST dining experience/birthday EVER!
PS: Urban Fondue Managers (if you read this): I want the overage charged to my debit card REFUNDED ASAP, & as much as you charge for your food, I think that you can afford to hire some more adequately trained wait staff.
Fun Date Night!. Great food and atmosphere. The place was completely packed, but our waiter escorted us to Bartini (next door) and we were promptly served. Thanks!

I'm so glad we discovered this place. We had dinner there for our anniversary and the service was wonderful! Our waiter was just the right mix of attentive and unobtrusive.
This isn't an eat and run kind of place; it takes time so plan to spend the evening relaxing and enjoying the people you're with.
We have tried the chain fondue places but this place is so much better!
The red swirled walls give off an elegant vibe and made us forget we were in rainy Portland.
We had the fondue experience so we could try everything; steak & lobster, shrimp, an amazing brie and gorgonzola cheese combination and chocolate with raspberry swirled in for desert!
We'll definitely be back!
Cramped, Mediocre Fondue.
Our party of five was running late due to an accident on the Ross Island bridge that backed up traffic. I called from my cell to to let them know we were running late. Unfortunately, they don't answer the phone. I called several times, but consistently got a machine. Just as we got parked, they called me to ask if we were still coming. Guess they don't know how to use the phone or the phone answering machine.
The five of us got seated at a table that was really only big enough for four. Consequently, my left shoulder stuck out in the main front-to-back aisle so every few minutes I got jostled by a passing server or patron. This got annoying fast. As if things weren't cramped enough, they went ahead and seated five adults, a 5 year old and an infant at a table intended for four just to my left. The mom in that party sat with the infant in her lap which put the back of her chair WAY out in the same aisle my left shoulder was trying to occupy. By this time I was just plan annoyed. I simply cannot eat when people are constantly jostling me, stepping on my feet, and asking me to "scoot over". The woman with the infant on her lap was NEVER asked to "scoot over".
The server was really not very articulate or capable of explaining the menu options. The fact that we had an odd number in our party seemed to be an insurmountable obstacle.
The cheese course was gut-bomby. The entrees were heavy as well. Due to the cramped quarters I could not reach two of the three cooking pots.
The desert course arrived about half frozen. The strawberries were hard as rocks. The cheesecake was frosty and the cookie dough was an icicle.
I couldn't get out of there fast enough. However, I was told that the "American Express Machine is down" so they couldn't process my AMEX card. I suspect they simply didn't want to pay the additional surcharge that AMEX requires. A better way to handle that is is simply NOT ACCEPT AMEX!! I paid with my Visa card. Nearly got hot broth dumped down my back by a passing server and left.
Next time we want fondue we'll go to The Melting Pot. It's more expensive, but at least ya don't get jostled every 15 seconds and the food isn't frozen.
The owner and or manager of this restaurant has much to learn about creating a pleasant dining experience. I will not be returning to this restaurant.
What a find!!. Found this little gem by accident. Looked on line for funky places to visit while in Portland and found Bartini, which is connected to Urban fondue. Walked in and was seated in the back in a cushy booth/chair combo. Sean was a waiter and what a jewel!!! He was super knowledgeable and guided us to select a very good meal right down to the dipping sauces. As there were3 of us, we chose the THE FONDUE EXPERIENCE $31.95 per person, minimum two people, for two. There was plenty of food for the 3 of us and we enjoyed every minute of it. If you go there make sure you have plenty of time because that is what fondue is - takes time to cook. Also, ask for Sean and you won't be disappointed!!!
The meal started out great with a nice cheese fondue. Then, eventually, came the main course. The food comes raw and you cook it at your table. Problem is the times are estimates and even when we cooked it for double the recommended time certain items still seemed undercooked. The broth options for cooking the food were all unappealing and the one we chose was not good.
All but one of the dipping sauces for dipping the hopefully finally cooked food were not the least bit good. Lastly the dessert was reminiscent of a late night binge after a night of drinking. It was a fondue of your choice and then a hodge podge of things to dip in the fondue like cookie dough (gross) and other odd dipping choices that seemed like a mix of leftover items in their fridge. If you do decide to go here, which I wouldn't advise, make sure you budget several hours as the experience takes a very long time. I wish I had known that - eating at Urban Fondue wasn't supposed to be our only activity but because it took so long we had no time left for anything else.
Obviously from the reviews they do have a big cult following although I can't for the life of me figure out why. I can only guess that a lot of the people who like it there haven't eaten at better places and assume that this is good food. But for $100+ you can get so much better food.
Excellent. I thoroughly agree with the last posting. I am a big fan of Urban Fondue. If you want a unique, charming, fun and delicious dinner experience Urban Fondue is a must. I find the style of the restaurant and menu unique and refreshing. Their smoked cheddar fondue is amazing and I find myself craving it days after having it. I always save room for their absolutely out of this world caramel fondue. The prices are just right, and therefore I am able to dine there more often than many other downtown restaurants. Having a stellar drink list is the icing on the cake.
yum!. I'd been wanting to go to Urban Fondue for a couple years now, and I finally got the chance to go the other night for a family get together. I wasn't disappointed. Urban Fondue has a cozy atmosphere, is dimly lit, a little artsy, and has private booths. It was nice. It's one of those places to go to dinner if you want to spend a lot of time with your company and talk. I think our dinner took about 2 1/2 hours, and I was very stuffed at the end! It's a little expensive but what do you expect? The food is good, the atmosphere is nice, and it actually takes a lot of time to eat a 4 course fondue dinner! The service is good... it's a great/romantic place to take a date. I'd like to go back again. And I read another review where they said the cookie dough was frozen... well, once you put it in the hot caramel sauce, or chocolate sauce it isn't frozen anymore! I thought it was delicious, if the cookie dough was completely thawed it would've melted! Just leave the cookie dough in the sauce longer and it will come out any way you like.... it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out. And as long as you go in with a good attitude and don't expect everything to be COMPLETELY PERFECT, you won't find every single thing wrong with it. It's called confirmation bias. If you go in judging everything and looking for flaws of course you're going to find them. Even if they're only imagined. So yeah, urban fondue = good and fun time!
