Editorial Review for Alotto Gelato – by Rachel Bellacera

In Short
Citrus-colored walls and lively service create an indicative prelude to the delicious, refreshing gelato served by the scoop. The small, cozy treat-shop delights both neighborhood families and weekend shoppers. Housemade flavors like cantaloupe produce a genuine sensation of the real thing--a mouthwatering melon; the chocolatey gianduja invokes an incantation of chilly, creamy Nutella; and the coconut comes studded with crispy white flakes.

I used to go to this place all the time a little over a year ago when I lived in the northwest. When I went the Gelato was great always fresh and flavorful, the service was not so great, a bunch of kids talking on their cell phones and rushing you out the door at closing. Well I went back recently and sadly the only thing that changed was the gelato. It seemed bland, the texture was bad, all the gelatos looked messy, and nothing tasted fresh. I am really surprised! This place used to be really good. WHAT HAPPENED?? either way I don't think I will be making the 20 minute drive for it again especailly since they apparently shut off the espresso machine an hour before they close. all around a disappointing experience.

We were strolling down 23rd Avenue for the first time this weekend, and when I saw a gelato shop I was thrilled. It had been years (since I lived in Europe) since I last had some really good gelato. We went in, got some samples from the very friendly staff, and I ended up having a chocolate and tiramisu 2-scoop cone that was just wonderful. We'll definitely be back!

Pros: friendly staff, lots of choices, delicious gelato!

Cons: small place, so I can see it getting crowded
