Editorial Review for Apizza Scholls – by Annamaria Pardini
In Short
You won't notice the plain storefront or minimalist interior for the throngs of people waiting to dine on this celebrated gourmet pie. Couples, families and groups come from all over town for the crisp and chewy crust; the product of a 24-hour slow fermented dough and very hot oven. The star crust is judiciously topped with combinations of whole milk mozzarella, fresh garlic, and Viande meats. Traditional Caesar salad and house-made cannoli complete the meal.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoThe last seating is 30 minutes before closing or until they run out of the day's supply of fresh dough.
Where To SitThe outdoor patio is popular, especially on warm evenings when the main restaurant can feel a bit warm and cramped.

Ok, short story: Pizza and salads are great but you have to wait awhile to get seated, so don't go hungry. Plan to wait about an hour and you will be good. The pizza is worth it (I had my doubts about the wait, but trust me).

Like some of the other reviewers, I can't say enough good about this place. I love it!! Yes, you have to wait, yet somehow after having eaten the holy pies they make in that teeny kitchen, the waiting--the waiting--the waiting just makes the pizza experience, when it comes, all that more pleasurable. This is the best pizza I have eaten on the west coast. It feels like a grand experience to eat a pizza made by people who understand how refined and heavenly pizza can be. Is there anything better than a piping hot pizza made with love and the best ingredients???? NO!! I go to NY just to wander around eating pizza. I've sampled some of the most close-to-God-pizza (John's in Greenwich Village; Lombardi;s; Totonno's), and Apizza Scholls is UP there with the best of the east. My husband and I used to go to Marco's on Hawthorne and they had a very decent slice, if it was hot, and we liked the people so we went all the time, for a slice. Apizza Scolls is not a slice joint. When you come in, you have to wait, but they make the waiting palatable with an exellent and balanced beer and wine selection. There is a little bit of a grown-up vibe inside the place; lots of uppity white liberal folks from Mt. Tabor sipping summery wines. I had a great pilsner which enabled me to tune out the landed gentry in the tiny waiting area. The restaurant should have a patio on the sidewalk (summer only) for the customers who are getting hammered while anticipating the reward for their wait. The Caesar salad is perfect, soft, non-industral romaine--intact leaves, dressed exactly correctly (correct recipe); add the anchovies, please. I will be as loyal to their Caesar as I am to their pizza. This has been a love letter to this restaurant!
Pros: polite, unpretentious/hardworking staff; great beer
Cons: Waiting area is too close for Portlanders; a little bit yuppie/white bread
