Abandon any notions about west coast pizza before entering this world-class pizzeria, which serves thin, classical NYC / New Haven style pizza of a quality even better than any but a handful of its models. Also abandon any notion of getting it fast.

Sometimes, you’re just sitting there watching Apizza’s Twitter feed, staring, waiting, wishing, sometimes for days, and then finally, voila! Up pop those precious three little words—Meatball Pizza Tonight. And life is good.
Apizza Scholl’s Caesar salad is a large plate of whole romaine heart leaves—so you can totally eat with your fingers—parmigiano reggiano, and house made croutons, all tossed in the house Caesar dressing that’s made daily.
Burnt Pizza, No Service. We were referred to this place because we were in the area and told to get there before the line started piling up. I was pretty excited by the way this person talked about the pizza. If you look closely at the photo above, it's exactly what you'll get, a burned black pizza. The server took our order and that was it, I had to get up several times to get sugar, utensils, etc. Never again, the pizza tasted okay but I did not like how burnt it was, it wasn't just a little edge, the whole bottom was burned black, and the service was non-existent.
Lousy Pizza. I went there once and have never gone back. I don't understand why people wait for hours to go to this place. When I went you could only order one topping, which was a few years ago. We also asked if they could not cook the pizza as long so the crust wouldn't be burnt. No. So you get a lousy pizza with a burnt crust. There are so many better places to go for pizza in Portland or Vancouver.
BAD SERVICE & Overpriced Hype.
Nothing like spending 30% more than anywhere else in town and being treated like crap on top. Waiters with hipster attitudes, bartender acts like rude and uninterested.
Incredibly long wait for pizza, with maybe 10 people in the whole place. Couldn't bring out two pizzas together, ten minutes apart, no apologies. WOW, have these guys fallen apart, never seen a place go so high and come down so hard. Don't go!
Exceptionally Rude Service.
I have never been inspired to write a review until now. I went to Apizza Scholls for the first time tonight and will not be back.
We waited at the bar to order drinks and were ignored, the bartender actually asked us what we wanted and then walked away, when he came back he asked us again. I tried to pay for my wine because I was going to be leaving early and the waiter wanted me to put it on the tab. When I told him I wanted to pay right away he was exceptionally rude, like it was a huge inconvenience to take my money.
It takes more than good food in this town to make a good restaurant. Bad service will ruin my experience every time.
Entertaining a New Yorker. My sister in law is in town from NYC and we wanted tot take her and our kids out for some good pizza. When we got there the host said the wait would be "just a few minutes". I have a 9 month old, a 7 and 9 year old boys and it was 7pm on a school night. We ended up waiting 30 minutes and people that entered after us were seated before us. While we were waiting, I had plenty of time to check out the place. The atmosphere is sterile and lacks character. Reminded me of North's chuck wagon from when i was a kid. The service was mediocre at best. Our server was nice but slow and not very attentive. The pizza on the other hand, was petty good (we ordered one with red sauce and one without). The house salad was also good. Get it to GO!
Wow, best I've had!.
I had my introduction to passionate pizza this weekend in NYC starting at Grimaldi's in Brooklyn, and other spots. Returning to Portland I was still craving that style of pizza, something thin, cooked hot and fast and with extra love.
The pizza at Apizza Scholls shows that dedication to perfection that has come to be the hallmark of many places around Portland has spilled over into pizza. I don't know how describe the pie, but its thin without being limp, smokey crust without being burnt, and amazing, simple ingredients. Definitely hit this spot if you think you know good pizza!
Note: I you think pizza has to have 2 inches of meaty toppings on it, and super thick pan crust, you won't like this place....
Another wonderful meal. There is something really nice about a place that serves fabulous food and the servers are adept enough to remember you...we couldn't have gone there 3 or 4 times before they started to remember how we take our drinks. As a couple that eats our every night this is not the norm. This place offers the best of everything....excellent food and excellent service. I love Apizza Scholls!
disappointing. Very, very long waiting, also because they didn't respect the order of arrival. Then, we got a burnt pizza with very poor topping. This was a bad experience.
The best.
I was so discouraged at the west coast pizza and how it differs from the East Coast, until My friend too my here.
Excellent! The crust is good, tasty chewy and not soggy like so many other places. The sauce is excellent, flavorful. And the cheese is great.
This place has the right stuff for great pizza. Too bad there were not more of this kind of pizza in Portland.
My definition of good pizza... You just had thanksgiving dinner and you are stuffed to the gills, you go out with your friends... they serve pizza... If you are too full, the pizza is not all that, if however you have room for a slice, it's great pizza!! :)
Apizza Scholls... not so great!.
I don't get the obsession with this place. The crust is okay, the sauce is okay, the toppings are fresh but, what about the cheese? In my book, the cheese is essential to a good pizza. Along with a GOOD sauce and crust. They have none of these qualities. I was extremely disappointed by A Pizza Scholls. They do NOT produce the type of pizza that deserves any kind of wait. Escape From NY puts them to shame. I had to add salt to my pizza because they didn't add enough cheese to qualify for a "tasteful" pizza. Cheese, in my opinion... along with the crust and sauce, makes the pizza. BUT, the cheese is essential. I could hardly see the cheese on the pizza and we had to ask for some parmesan because they don't keep it on the tables. The ultimate call out was that they tell you they will take $2 off your order if you don't have cheese. BIG indication they are going to be chinzy on this!
In my opinion, they don't deserve the attention or the biz they are getting. The only thing I can say is that the wait staff was great and very attentive.
