Portland >Original Halibuts
Nothing fancy about Halibut's, but it's a reliable stop when you're in the Alberta hood and simply must have good, fresh fish 'n chips. All orders can be made GF, just ask. Great food and drink specials on the happy hour menu, offered daily 3-6pm.
Awesome Halibut Fish and Chps. I give this a 5 star review for it's food only. Yes, it is slightly higher priced than competition but the fish and chips are more than worth it as well as the chowder-their fries are even worth mentioning. I have only been eating here over the last 4 mos. or so and the service has always been adeqate, one gal imparticular (who's name I can't remember-maybe Rachel) quite possibly the friendliest wait person ever. However, I would not recommend eating there if the owner is on site. He is charasmatic and jovial upon first impression but doesn't quit, which ends up turning into loud, overbearing, and annoying. Fish and Chps awesome, service satisfactory, atmoshpeher questionable especially when the owner is present. I am trying to find a place with equally great fish and chips minus the obnoxious owner.
Terrible service & overpriced!.
We dined @ Halibuts Friday, 9/21/07. It took over 10 minutes for a wait person to come to our outside table. I actually had to go inside to ask if we were going to be served. They were not busy.
We paid $34.00 for two four piece halibut fish & chips plates, a side of slaw, and two canned sodas. No wonder they were @ $800.00 in sales that day. (The Owner & waitress were outside discussing this openly amongst the patrons which I found as a huge turn off.)
And, previously I had used my debit card there. I was overcharged by Halibuts. I called to speak to the Owner who actually cursed at the Bank and offered no apology or reimbursement.
Lastnight was our last visit to Halibuts.
We should have went to Thai Noon.
Good Food but Overpriced. I enjoyed the halibut fish and chips but very overpriced. For $9 I got two very small pieces of fish and not many fries. I left hungry which does speak well of the portions.
Great music! Sorry the food and the service arent.. I have gone to Halibuts over the past couple of years because of the great music and it is non smoking. but what keeps me from coming back more often is the bad service and attitude of the waitresses in the bar and the high cost. $15 for fish and chips ( It is fish and chips for God' sake not lobster), and $6 for a cup of chowder, served in a paper cup, and a small cup at that. Not a big bowl like at Moe's served with hot sour dough bread, just oyster crackers. And if they are going to charge those kind of prices you should get enough food to fill you up. Another bothersome thing is that they put the fish on top of the fries so the fries get all the oil that drips off the fish making them undesirable. They dint have salad just slaw. The place is really small and you would think the waitress would come by every few minutes to check if things were OK. We wait for water refills, we get soup with the fish so the fish gets cold while you eat the soup and the empty plate sits in front of you for a long time before it is taken away. And to top it all they are not friendly. The people behind the counter at the take out are great but in the bar it is totally different. You feel your are in a tavern not a nice restaurant bar. Advice, Go to hear great music and have a drink but get your meals some where else.
For a place that specializes in Fish and Chips they just don't deliver..
I've been on a fish and chips kick lately, so I decided to try this place. I remember reading about it in the Willamette Weekly in their article about trans-fats and how the owner tried switching to a healthier oil, but didn't like the results. Not the best sign, but hey this is fried food.
I orderded a full serving of true cod. I wanted the Halibut, but it was $14 or so not including a side of slaw. That is expensive for bar food. The order came in a basket with seasoned fries and tarter sauce. Why don't they use plates? Heck if they want to be traditional, why not use newspaper? The fish was super greasy and the thick batter was falling off the fish before I could eat it. The cod was moist and flavorfull, but the grease factor negated the experience. The slaw was watery and as sweet as KFC slaw. The fries were good, but since they put them under the fish in a small basket, they don't give you many.
I went to the Alameda Brewery the following week and their fish and chips was $12.95 for halibut and it came with a mountain of slaw which had more seasoning and was less watery. It wasn't as greasy and seemed to be a little larger portion of fish, but not any more fries than Halibuts. So far, the best I've had around here is the Hawthorne Fish House. They use rice oil and the coating is so dry and flaky and the fish moist and tender. Although they are even more expensive than Halibuts, and no slaw, but they have sweet potatoe fries!
On a positive note, I really enjoyed the Wednesday night band in the bar side and the service was good, but the fish doesn't live up to the hype of a place that specializes in fish and chips and it was greasy.
Greasy and overpriced!@. This was a disappointment for a fish lover. Halibut and Prawns dripping in grease. With fries in a basket for $14 or $15 dollars for 4 halibut and a similar price for a few prawns. Service was like a sleasy tavern....definitely does not go well with the pricing . They have such a limited menu...not a salad on the menu except for some really high fat tasting cole slaw. I hope they can improve. Actually I have had better service in sleazey taverns. Sorry to all the tavern waitresses who really give a darn....
Good Fish, small portions.. Well, I do think the fish is about the best I ever had, But my last visit was less than perfect. I have been here a few times and the owner is friendly but loud. This visit I got 2 pc fish to go. $9, the gal working the register asked if I would like some chowder. sure I said. What i didn't realize was its $6 for a cup of chowder? That is crazy! Not even the Heathman would charge you $6 for a cup of soup. I get the order home and minimal fires and two small pcs of fish. When I was in before i got lots o fries and bigger pcs of fish. Maybe its was smaller because it was a to go order, but I don't think I will go back. Not a good deal for $15 if I am still hunger after I eat.
Great Food, Great Atmosphere, and Great Music!. Great food, great atmosphere, and great music! Original Halibut's is a small place so arrive no later than 8:00pm to get a seat in the bar to listen to whoever is playing there that night. The wait staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. Dave Mc Kay is the owner and greets everyone with friendly conversation as well as making sure that each patrons experience is always great.
far too expensive for what you get. i am not hard to please, let's get that straight from the get go. this place is overpriced for the quality of service and somewhat fast food atmosphere. just because you have a bar and live music it doesn't mean it's Jake's. $10 for the large catfish at lunch time is ridiculous and there isn't alot of food for that price as it is. it was good food, but if you are gong to serve catfish fry up some hush puppies for goodness sake. and $6 for a bowl of chowder, which they claim is Soooooo big, yeah, i've seen bigger for less and that's on the westside! and if my husband and i are going to go out and spend $15 per person for food (which constitutes half the menu choices) i can name 20 restaurants in this town with better food, atmosphere and service. how the heck they are surviving amongst the alberta cheap eats crowd i will never know. good luck with that ...
Who does he think he is?. It's true. The fish is great. The chowder is excellent. The service is also great and getting better every time I go in! The biggest drawback I've ever found is the owner. A jovial guy, that's for sure. Quite the character. However, on at least two occassions now, my wait to place my order, has been delayed while he not just criticized his workers at the counter, but straight out yelled at and humiliated them in front of the whole resteraunt. It was like a total 180! No matter what theproblem was (and it sounded like a small one) I am sure there was a better time for that to be brought up. A near empty tip jar, and a tyrant of a boss. I don't enjoy placing my order with a girl who is nearly in tears. Since then, I can't stand to listen to his tawdry boasting. It's no longer endearing.
