Editorial Review for Olea – by Ashley Griffin
In Short
Chef Aaron Barnett presents a rustic, Mediterranean-inspired menu that taps the cuisines of Italy, France, and Spain. Start with a plate of subtly sweet prosciutto-wrapped dates drizzled with black pepper vanilla oil. Then, move to bold starters like the octopus carpaccio--a must for anyone who loves a good truffle vinaigrette. Entrees impress, especially a tender, pan-seared chicken served atop cipollini onions, prosciutto and new potatoes, and orecchiette pasta paired with tender braised oxtail, chilis, pomegranate seeds and pine nuts.

Know Before You GoSave room for dessert: Sweets here impress and satisfy, especially the housemade ice creams, and the prettily presented pineapple spice cake served with addictive rum ice cream and a root beer reduction.

Made a reservation for my boyfriend and I for a Friday night. Ambiance is nice, I am not a huge fan of small tables though. We ordered a salad (can't remember which one) to start which we shared and it was delicious. I'm sure the others on the menu are great as well. I read that the Steak Frites was the best item on the menu, so we both ordered it. The "frites" come in a tin can which is kind of neat. The steak was not the best I've ever had, which I wasn't expecting it to be as this is not a steakhouse, but it was a tad bit chewy for me. I would definitely order something else the next time I visit. Also have to mention, HATE trying to park in the pearl district.

Spent last night in Portland and was impressed with the array of establishments around my hotel. I ended up at Olea in their bar area. It was packed with a very nice crowd and the music and food were amazing. I sampled a few items from the Bar menu and ordered an entree from the main menu. Everything was wonderful but the Scallops were Excellent. It seemed like a great place to gather with friends or Have a more elegant experience in the restaurant. Next time!
Pros: Live music & great food
Cons: Quite loud
