Changed for the worse

Sushi Mania is now Umi Sushi. I loved Sushi Mania and Umi is only okay. They claim to have better sushi, better service, and better prices than Sushi Mania. I always order one of the make your own vegetarian rolls and they still have that and it's still good. My boyfriend ordered the Shrimp Killer which used to be loaded with tiny saucy shrimp on top but now has about 1/3 of them- still tasty, but not as shrimpy. He said his Oregon and Spicy Tuna rolls still tasted okay but not terrific and they've definitely changed. They're now much bigger will a lot more rice and the nori on the outside. So, this my be why they say they have better prices because if you go by sheer mass of the roll, I guess the value is better? But, bigger isn't always better, especially when it comes to sushi. If you try to only eat part of the piece it falls apart but it's too much to put in your mouth at one time and still maintain your dignity so I wouldn't recommend this place for a date with someone you don't know well. The seaweed salad was good. The Agedashi Tofu was awful and I sent it back- much more breading than Sushi Mania had and it tasted like they'd dredged it in too much flour that didn't get cooked. I had to send it back. As far as the service goes- there was always that one sweet waitress who still works there. She was always good and still is. The other waitress is a white chick who gets the job done but I'm glad I didn't get her last night. I was still able to get a table right away around 7:30 on a Friday night. So... I may come back for their vegetarian sushi but I won't recommend this place to friends now and I'll be on the look out for my new favorite sushi place.
- Pros: Vegetarian sushi
- Cons: Most of the changes

i always come here in the early evening and get seated right away. the selction is great. i like the names of the different dishes. my favorite to eat is the caterpillar roll and the scallop volcano. I polish it all off with an Asahi and i get a contented full stomach sushi high for the next 3 hours.
- Pros: good service, friendly staff, good sushi selection
- Cons: slightly cramped, but if you can get a booth its fine. wish they were open earlier.
Surprisingly fine atmosphere and incredible yummy sushi!

We were seated immediately and the staff were all smiles and help. The sushi options are vast and funny. Never thought I'd love warm, tempura sushi...BUT I DID! Large portions with very reasonable prices. I'm worried about posting this cause I don't want to ruin a good thing, but we'll definitely be back over and over again. :)
cheers!
- Pros: inventive menu
- Cons: nothing
