I trust Betsy.
Betsy has been my hair colorist for over 2 years now and I could not be happier; she is conscientious and methodical with color and gives
great haircuts.
Betsy cut my husbands hair yesterday, as she has for sometime. She makes his thick, challenging hair look great - every single time.
She does great work, has always been flexible, very accommodating and easy to work with. I recommend her without hesitation.

Not very knowledgable in the mixing of color..
I came to this salon yesterday having pretty high expectations based on all the good reviews. I've had a lot of bad hair color experiences
in my life, along with a few really good ones that allow me to know that there ARE actually colorists out there who know what they're doing as far as the chemistry of mixing color and applying it to an individual to achieve a desired result.
I went to Betsy, who was very nice, but apparently not knowledgable enough in working with color to give me the outcome I asked for. I went in with practically virgin hair. My natural color is basic light brown. So the top half of my long-ish hair was this "virgin" hair and the lower half was slightly lighter because of fading from the sun and a few old highlights.
I asked Betsy to do an all-over color to pull my natural brown through to the ends that had faded, and then add a few natural looking highlights. Seemed pretty basic to me. Betsy wanted to use a warm color as the base. I asked her to stay away from warm colors because I know from past experience that they turn out orange on me. I asked her to stick with neutral shades.
After she rinsed the color out we went back to the mirror. I could already see that it was clearly very orangey. Maybe she decided to go with the warm color despite what I told her? I don't know, but I'm so happy my sister was there because I actually had a witness to testify that YES, it was indeed pretty orange and I wasn't just being picky. My sister said I had a Fifth Element thing going on. The frustrating part is when a stylist acts surprised that you don't like it and looks at you like, "What? But it's so pretty!" I'm so tempted to say, ummm really?? I'm pretty sure I specifically said NO ORANGE.
So in order to fix it and get the orange out she would have to put a darker, ashy shade of brunette over the whole thing. I said I would be fine if it turned out a basic brunette color like Natalie Portman's or something.
So $85 and 4 hours later, I left with an all-over med/dark brown, ashy, unflattering, blah color on my hair. A color not even as nice as I could get from a box. I came in with hair that was almost virgin but is now twice processed plus the damage of highlights without even actually having any highlights to show for it.
Betsy told me that I could come in again later to get some more highlights put in if that would help, but I won't be going back. I've already done enough damage to my hair plus I felt like the whole color process was a guessing game and I am looking for a stylist who really knows how to mix and work with color instead of using trial and error.
Like I said, Betsy was pretty nice throughout the whole ordeal. I did feel she was a bit condescending though as I was leaving. She asked, "Well, have you EVER been happy with your results?". The answer is YES, I'm happy when I leave a salon with the results that I asked for!
And one more thing- there was an area by my ear that she forgot to rinse at the sink. So when she was blowdrying me at the end, I noticed that this area was darker than the rest and it was turning the little wispy "sideburn" hairs on my face really dark. I pointed it out and she was so non-chalant like, "oh oops, forgot to rinse that area out".... She just squirted it with a squirt bottle and wiped it with a towel. Also, she stained my forehead in multiple places and told me to just give it a few days and it would go away. I've never left a salon with stains on my forehead before.
I feel really bad writing all this because I'm sure Betsy is a nice person, but I have to be honest about my experience for the readers out there like me who are going off these reviews. I feel a lot of times these Citysearch-type review cites are misleading because family members or friends probably come on here and write all these raving reviews as a form of promotion.

BEST HIGHLIGHTS!!!.
First, Betsy is amazing! Her great, sincere personality + unbelievable talent with highlighting my hair = perfect hair stylist!! I
literally just had my hair done by her about 15 minutes ago and am SO happy with the outcome that I had to write a review.
I have been to soooo many hair salons in southern Cali (where I'm from), Seattle, and Portland, each time leaving with an unsatisfied feeling because my highlights just never seemed to look good with my natural hair color (light brown, dark dark blonde). They always left my hair looking very brassy and just....not good. Betsy at the Dezi Salon exceeded my expectations, and seriously, for the first time ever in my attempts to lighten my hair have I been so happy with the outcome. Perfect. Thanks Betsy!

Best hair experience in a long time!. I cannot say enough good things about this salon and Amber! The salon is top notch and Amber gave me the best cut and color I have had since living in Portland! The salon itself is quaint and very comfortable, a refreshing break from those huge mega salons where you feel like you are in a assembly line! If you are looking for a amazing new hairstyle I would give Amber a call, you will not be dissappointed! View Less … View More
Management doesn't value customer service or their word.
I am hesitant to write this review, as I dislike leaving negative feedback. However, I would want to know this information if I were making
a decision regarding whether to patronize Dezi.
I am a 30-something health-care professional who, despite appreciation of edgy color, needs to maintain a moderate appearance and therefore tries to attain a slight edge in my cuts. I had long, brown, curly hair that fell to the lower half of my back when I arrived. I told Josh that I wanted a just-above my shoulders bob. I clarified that I did not want my hair shorter than chin-length. I also requested an A-line cut. Josh delivered a very precise and stylish cut, with which I was relatively happy - except that it dried to at least an inch above my chin. Since I knew it would grow out, and the shape was good, I was not too bothered by this. In fact, I truly enjoyed the new shape.
Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for the color. I asked for dark chocolate hair with cherry cola highlights. I had this combination several times back at my Chicago-area salon, before moving to Portland. What I left Dezi with was absolutely horrid. My hair appeared almost black with fuschsia/hot-orange-y pink stripes. Yes, stripes. To confirm whether I was overreacting, I asked a nurse if she thought I could see patients like this the following day. She uncomfortably informed me I needed to find someone to do color correction immediately. I did so, at my own cost, as Dezi is closed on Monday.
I contacted the salon that week. I let Dan, the manager, know that although I appreciated Josh's time and effort (and had tipped over $50 for such), I had not seen the final color as my hair was still wet when I left Dezi. I explained the results. Dan said that they never have complaints, and was not sure what to do. In a later phone call, he said he would provide a refund of $80 (of the $200-ish bill), for the color mistake. He asked for my address, which I provided so that he could mail a check, and then proceeded to do nothing. For seven months. my attempts at follow-up have only been ignored. I have not received the check I was promised, and now realize I never will.
So, to sum up, Josh delivers an excellent cut, is very attentive, and I do truly believe made an uncharacteristic mistake on my color. On the other hand, the management makes promises they do not keep and does not appear to care about unsatisfied customers, despite comments added to other reviews.
Would I go back? To Dezi - no. To Josh, if he were somewhere else, for a cut - yep! I'll get my color elsewhere.
