Portland >Savoy Tavern & Bistro
I LOVE THIS PLACE! Very good food and reasonably priced. I love coming here and reading on weeknights. The food is always well prepared and their specials rotate.
We came for the Sunday evening fried chicken special, but were not informed that it was sold out until after we had received our drinks. It was seven o'clock, honestly it is just chicken ,why would they not have enough to last the evening.
So we ordered the prairie popcorn,Which are hush puppies with meat in them. It was the worst thing I have ever eaten.Tough and flavorless.
We left and ate at the Press Club.
very Portlandia (in a not good way). I was not surprised at the usual lack of customer service, "service w/ a shrug", and the lackadazical attitude in combination w/ the undercooked meatballs served in the low lighting as to asure the customer can not tell they are being served undercooked meat. When I had to finally get up to obtain extra plates myself, that was the final straw! If you are into this kind of place put a bird on your clothes and enjoy!
Shameful Service - we won't be returning anytime soon.
The owners of Savoy should be ashamed of how they treat customers!
I went for dinner with a group of 8 and we were told there would be a 20 minute wait. After spending good money at the bar, we were finally seated an hour later. No complaints. Then they forgot about all of our appetizers. This would have been a great time for them to apologize, check to see if we needed anything, and maybe even send over something to make up for it. The wait staff did none of these things, and we still didn't complain. Finally, when we went to pay, we were informed that they only accept 2 credit cards per table. Are you kidding me - for 8 people?! If they are going with this ridiculous policy, they should make a point of letting people know BEFORE they eat. Even the manager wouldn't make an exception and my friend finally had to go to an ATM across the street. Even though the food is good, we may never return to Savoy. Was losing our business really worth saving the restaurant a few dollars max on credit card charges?!!
Yuck Fest. Why or why ...did we ever think that the Savoy we have known and loved as our "go too" for many a years would improve???It was awful the last time we went June 2009 and even worse now Nov 2009. Sorry Charlie...we have other "go toos" that actually know how to prepare and present food. The Mac and Cheese was good ...but to dang salty. We won't be back even for the Mac!
Savoy happy hour. Need one say more.. Savoy is the best late night happy hour in town: A great meal with awsome drinks and it never costs more than $24.00 before tip. The service is always great and the burgers are fantastic.
a pleasant evening. We decided to stay on the eastside for dinner last night and discovered Savoy! Our food came promptly and the service was excellent. We started out with the wedge salad which was amazing. The sweet onions that topped this salad are the best! I had the steak which was cooked to perfection my only complaint was that it was over seasoned slightly (salty.) The greens and mac n cheese were outstanding. This is a perfect dinner date-way to show someone a great night in Portland. I cant wait to go back and bring friends. P.s on sundays they have fried chicken on there special menu Bring it on!
Was my favorite restaurant in Portland - will never go back after the last instance of awful service.. I have been to Savoy many times, almost always enjoyed the food, recommended it often and made it a point to take visitors there. But the last few times I've been, the staff has been so rude and inattentive that I can't make any more excuses to return. Last night our waitress basically ignored us, and had no interest in checking to see if we needed drinks, or water for that matter. The real kicker was when we were ready to settle up. Our party of 7 split the bill across 3 credit cards, which a different server than our own picked up and said was fine, helpful even, then we get the bill brought back to us by another server, who without comment rudely throws the check on the table which he had scrawled a passive-aggressive circle around a note on the receipt requesting no more than two cards per party. After we had already over-tipped on bad service, this snarky action was the last straw. Portland has too many great restaurants with far superior service - spend your money somewhere that deserves it. The servers at Savoy obviously feel like they don't need to impress anyone but themselves.
Efficient no nonsense service with excellent food. I make a point to eat at the Savoy while I'm in town. I like the dark, intimate atmosphere, the efficient, no nonsense staff and the food is always satisfying and tasty. I showed up at 7:15pm with no reservation and was able to take my pick of tables. I sat at the third table in, along the outside wall, facing the street window so that I could watch the rain and people coming in. I ordered a bottle of red wine (Chateau Les Amoureuses 2005), which was excellent. I started with a mushroom bruschetta, moved on to black cod & mussels, and finished with warm rhubarb/strawberry pie a la mode. The bruschetta was served without any special fanfare; sauteed mushrooms and onions on a slice of French bread on a bed of two fresh lettuce leaves. It was slight salty (to my taste) but the salt had a wonderful flavor that combined well with the wine. The cod & mussels, which sat in a buttery herb sauce, arrived in a timely manner. I removed all the mussels from their shells first so that the tender meat could bath in the sauce. The fish and mussels combination was delicious. Two crisp slices of garlic toast help me compose each bite. The rhubarb/strawberry pie had a crumble topping and delicate crust that was a perfect ending to the meal. The entire meal, including the bottle of wine cost $54 - not bad for a very satisfying dinner. When I arrived, most of the existing diners were pairs of women sharing a bottle of wine and an appetizer. One table began with two women and grew to six over the hour and a quarter I was there. The staff accommodated each newcomer easily, taking and delivering late orders without concern. Later, at another table, two men joined two women who had occupied the aisle seats. The guys literally shoved the women to wall seats, acting as if they were taking over the table. I remember thinking that these guys were cretins. All in all, it was a very satisfying evening. I highly recommend the Savoy.
Love the decor, and the food does match. I love cheesecurds. So...I find restaurants that serve them, and I track them down, and I sample. WOW! These are the best ever. Way to go! Besides that, I love the zuchinni, salads and veggie burger. I also like that if I order an appetizer or salad and a meal, I'm not too stuffed to enjoy my meal when it comes. I enjoy the open kitchen that doesn't make me smell like I was in a kitchen all night. Somehow, it's been designed right. If the service seems not up to some standard, try treating the wait staff with respect (a good trick for those of us who understand service) and they will definitely warm up and take care of you. All in all, I love this place and look forward to my return visits.
