my favorite portland pub.... I love this tiny brewpub so much that my wife and I drive from far southeast portland to visit it. And we visit often. The small staff is friendly and attentive to the point that they know our 2-year-old daughter's name and her favorite menu items. Speaking of the menu, it is nice variety of pub food, all made fresh with fresh ingredients and there is a decent amount of vegan and vegetarian fare. Their beer batter is good enough to make you look like a glutton in front of your friends, their fresh fries are not at all greasy and despite it all being made to order, the food comes out fast and hot. The pickle-sized slices of fried zucchini will make you think that you are eating something healthy. Their sandwiches are reasonably priced and I would definitely recommend the Turkey-Pesto on Chiabatta. For hardcore carnivores, the Mash Tun Burger is one of the best burders I've ever tasted and incredibly cheap. For vegetarians, try the Falaffel in Pita or the Fried Eggplant. They are willing to make substitutions or changes so ask for it how you want it. Their beer selections are always diverse and interesting and they know how to recommend a beer you will like. Their featured brew includes one of their own creations at a special price per pint and usually one other local beer. The selection changes regularly so be sure to take advantage of Heather or Darcy's knowledge of good beers. The pool table is free as is the jukebox (the latter is filled with some of the best albums to ever occupy a pub jukebox: the clash, radiohead, tom waits, billy holiday, elliot smith, ella fitzgerald and the obligatory butt-rock along with many more obscure selections) and there is always a game on the tv over the bar or the newly-added big screen projector (and they always have the captions on so you can follow, even over the din of conversation. Smoke at the bar or out on the enclosed patio and make sure to make your contribution to the chalk board walls of the bathroom.

Best Alberta Bar. With the explosion of bars on Alberta Street, the Mash Tun is the clear winner. It is one of the best bars to hang out in the neighborhood. You can't go wrong with free Jukebox, peanut night, and $2 Tuesdays. It's not trying to be anything but what it is - a comfortable and rockin brewpub with great service, food, and beer.
