Originally launched in 1948, the Academy Theater was a popular Montavilla destination until its closure in the 1970s. Over the following
years, it fell into disrepair, but a full-scale $1m renovation was completed in 2006, including careful restoration of the glittering rounded lobby with its soaring, metallic two-story dome. Great attention was paid to every detail of the project. Using vintage photos from the original opening night, even the theater's signature marquee has been recreated to imbue the building with authentic 1940s charm.
They also have babysitting for children 6mos to 7yrs! Call ahead and reserve.
…

Occupying one of Portland’s most family-friendly little hoods, this Montavilla movie house knows its audience—for the price of a Dixie cup of popcorn at a traditional movie theater, you can buy babysitting services (only for the length of your movie, sorry) most days of the week, just call in advance. And where else can you get pizza, hot dogs, Miyamoto sushi and 10 microbrews PLUS kombucha on tap in one place?? Mark your calendars for Double Feature Mondays (two movies for $6) and Two For One Tuesdays.

Say you're in the service industry, which is well-represented in Portland, and Mondays & Tuesdays are your weekend. If this is the case head over to the cheap Academy Theater. On Mondays you can watch two movies for six bucks. On Tuesday, tickets are buy one, get one. And they show the good movies too, none of that "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" stuff or whatever movie Ben Stiller is in right now.
Great theater. wonderful seats, good pizza, delicious chocolates. The only thing I'd like to see is better beer selections- it would be great to have laurelwood or big sky or rogue or lucky lab beer.
Thanks Goodness. First off, I'm really happy about the rebirth of the Academy Theatre. I went here when I was in high school. The restoration (lobby) is wonderful. The price is amazingly inexpensive (they could raise it to $5 and it would still be a steal). The babysitting is a terrific idea (tho the original theatre had a great cry room with a glass wall). Now...the disappointment--i realize the financial need to have mulitple auditoriums just to turn a profit. However, this practice of taking a beautiful one-screen showhouse and chopping it up into bland, shoebox auditoriums was a bad idea in the 70s. I wish they had really "restored" the place with the one screen. They could have done just as well with innovative bookings and other features (using it for corporate rentals, concerts, jazz offerings, student film showing daily, etc.). All of the nit picking aside, they've done a terrific job, multiple screens and all. At least it's not a Nickel Ads warehouse anymore.
Best Pizza and best price anywhere in town!. This is easily the best money for your dollar in Portland if you want to see a movie. I used to like going to Bagdad and Keneddy School, but this theatre has everything those theatres have but BRAND NEW!
Nice Atmosphere. I was very impressed by the Academy. The employees were pleasant, the facility clean, and the theater comfortable. I was suprised by the variety of food items available, which included juice, salads and fresh fruit for purchase. Very nice! We ordered a large popcorn which was the largest size I've ever seen, and it only cost $4.50. I will definitely be back.
Great theater. Excellent staff, cute interior, clean, and you can watch a movie with your beer or hard cider! The snack bar had a great seletion of huge organic chocolate bars! Loved it.
Really friendly people, My kids LOVE the babysitters. This is a great place, the food is great, the prices are great but most importantly the babysitting is such an awesome offering. We are new to the area and don't have a babysitter yet. We have brought the kids here twice and they didn't want to leave either time. They had a different sitter both times and loved them both. If you are unsure of the quality childcare you would receive at a movie theatre, worry not. It will save you more money than if you had to pay someone to come to your house. It's really a great idea, I wish other places offered babysitting.
Still smells new!.
The space is lovely, the price is right, the food is good, the beer is cold,
the seats are comfy, the bathroom is super clean. My only thing (isn't there
always something) is that during every movie except one that I have seen in
that space, there are poeple who are talking FULL VOICE. Not sure why this
seems so "okay" at that theatre, but it hasn't driven me away yet. Too many
other great things going for it!
Love this theater!.
I love the price, and the small town feel of the Academy Theatre. We haven't used the child care yet, but the fact that they have it is very attractive. And it's just a family atmosphere in general -- for instance, when we were there the other day, the manager was carrying his child in a backpack! I love people who bring their kids to work.
Also, this theatre is so clean and comfortable! The bathrooms are nice, and the individual theatres are always nice and clean.
I recommend this theatre to everyone, whenever I get the chance.
Great Experience. Beautiful theater, Great pizza and beer, Wonderful childcare area and attendant. When we picked up the kids after a 2 hour movie, they still weren't bored with the playroom! The cost of a movie and childcare comes to about the same price as a first-run ticket elsewhere, and there you can't get beer and Flying Pie pizza.
Without a doubt the best movie pub in town!. Thanks mainly to the local McMenamins chain, Portland has many pizza pubs to choose from. The Academy is the greatest of all of them. Beautifully renovated, this historic theater now offers $3 movies, pizza from Flying Pie (the best in town, conviently right next door) as well as a selection of beer, wine and standard theater food. They have awesome new seats that recline and have trays that go into the cupholders to hold all your food and drinks! Also, the sound is great- 100 times better than most "cheap" theaters. Personally, I'd rather see a movie here than anywhere else in Portland, and that includes first run theaters. Kudos to the Academy!
