Editorial Review for L'Astra – by Ivy Manning
In Short
The low-brow, yet cheerful pink dining room is in direct view of the small open kitchen where the proprietors make sohphisticated homespun meals. The hand-typed lunch and dinner menus change weekly and focus on creative homey fare. Popular dishes include the celery root salad with roasted red peppers, homemade smoked salmon and goat cheese ravioli and the poached banana ice cream dessert. Best of all, everything is under $10.

I had heard good things about this place and initially liked the "best-kept-secret" hole-in-the-wall kind of feel of the place. The service was nice, if a little disorganized and low-pro. There was only one vegetarian entree on the menu (and no vegan entrees, btw). It was gnocci with some sort of bitter (too old?) cooked greens. Would have been good if the greens weren't so bitter. , but it was pretty uninspired anyway. The portion (small) and the presentation could both have used some improvement. The prices are pretty low but should probably be even lower for what they are offering. I'd love to see this place evolve, though. I hope they get the chance. From what I experienced, I'm guessing they may not make it that long.
Pros: secret hideaway sort of alternative, intimate ambiance
Cons: low-pro food and service
