The review below is extrmemly biased
by staceykorn
The review below is our first ever negative review. If you read the other reviews it is easy to see that it is extremely far-away from the other opinions. Once every few years you get a customer who has some personal issues. Unfortunately, this is one of them. This person filed a grievance with TWO local agencies and both institutions dismissed her claim very quickly.
Our return policy is posted properly on our front desk and is NO DIFFERENT than most privately owned retail businesses on NW 23rd or even in PDX. (Returns are for merchandise only, unless a product is defective.) I cannot explain why the consumer below cannot understand under any circumstance why a business like ours (and many others) cannot afford to give cash returns, we are not a big chain store. But I do know we try our best to provide "personal, local" service and live up to all the other rave reviews, magazine and newspaper articles, and features in local tour books that are EXTREMELY positive.
"Hello" is personally owned. Like most Mom and Pop stores, we work hard to make ends meet and STRIVE to provide great, personal customer service in order to compete with the chain stores only a few blocks away.
Pop in anytime. I can also provide documentation from my correspondence with the local agencies to see that her claim was deemed "unfounded".
Horrible customer service

I had a horrendous customer service experience with this store and would not recommend this store to anyone. I spent a substantial amount of money on merchandise. Within a short time after my purchase I returned to the store (the same day) to return one item. It was a gift for someone and I had found something better suited at a store down the street. The store would not take the merchandise back and informed me they have a no-return policy which is printed on the receipt (which obviously you only get after you make the purchase when it is too late). Your only option is to take a store credit. I tried to resolve the matter with the store manager but she was unwilling to speak with me. This store does not care about their customers.
- Cons: Poor customer service, poor sales staff, cramped store
The best books in town
by homeiseverything
I never know what to get those tweeners. Even the young ones are hard. I knew if I went to Hello Portland they would have something. What I discovered was a book that every kid would love instead of toss. Graphically thay are amazing, I don't know where they find them but if you want something unique and those big big book stores turn you off, this is the place for you. Then you will turn your head and oh my Gosh! There is a milion other cool things to ponder. Last year I put a cleaver pin on top of each christmas gift. This year I see they have plates that match. I can't wait to do my shopping all in one place.
- Pros: Cool gifts that show you put some thought into them. They have long hours
- Cons: I buy one for me and one for someone else
