Editorial Review for ZAYTOON – by Annamaria Pardini
In Short
Rows of liquor bottles sparkling behind a black granite bar serve as focal point for this two-story loft. Olive, mustard and orange walls warm the space between concrete floors and steel girders. A diverse, relaxed crowd occupies stylish main floor booths and tables; upstairs houses a billiards area. The menu focuses on appetizers such as olive hummus and spicy meatballs, which can be combined into a mezza plate. Locals flock for the Baba's Burgers, which is the most popular dish along with entrees and desserts.

The place looks cool and the food looked good, but I'm afraid I have to make a service complaint (and, of course, I make the claim that I high a very high tolerance for bad service - indeed, this is the first time I have ever written a review for anything - but you can take that for what it is). My wife and I went to Zaytoon Friday night (4/25/08) and sat down at a table in the bar/restaurant. It was past 9:30 and we didn't know when they stopped serving food, but other people were receiving their dishes. There was a dark-haired, facially-pierced, etc., waitress who had sort of a Joan Jett thing going (is that really back in?) who was the only person working the floor - except she wasn't really working. She instead was hanging at the bar talking to friends. I tried to get her attention a few times to no avail (I actually started to think that maybe she wasn't working after all but, no, she was just ignoring us). So I finally went up to the bar and asked the guy if they were still serving food and he said yes - he was very polite - and he asked the waitress for some help. She broke away from her friends long enough to come over to our table and dump a stack of menus in front of of us and mutter something about table service ending soon. That was the last straw for my wife and we got up and left (mission accomplished for the waitress, apparently). You know, both my wife and I have worked in restaurants and we know it s%cks when people come in late, but all she would have had to do is tell us - without the attitude - that the kitchen was closing and we would have gladly gone elsewhere. Instead, she had to be b*$%h, and now here I am giving Zaytoon a crappy review. Hopefully, the management will get rid of her (I could tell that the hardworking bartender clearly knew that she s%#ked).

This place puts a new face on pub grub. Middle-eastern fusion has something for everyone: possibly the best burger in town, mezza, al dente lentil soup, and flawless martinis to wash it all down. The upstairs and downstairs provide two different atmospheres like ocean strata. The upstairs is lounge with a pool table that will give anyone confidence and leather couches. Downstairs is a dining room that would work for your first date, an out of town relative or a business meeting (wifi!). As if that weren't enough, the prices are very reasonable. The prawns with balsamic reduction is under $10 and the appetizers can be ordered ala carte for filling entree. Everything here is a great value with some class and pizazz.
Pros: Great bartenders!
Cons: Not open until five
