What Our Expert Scouts Say

Screen Door

This contender for Portland's longest brunch line serves an outstanding burger and chicken & waffles. Bring 5 friends and make a reservation to skip the wait!

Best known for its lines, I mean, its epic fried chicken, this beloved Burnside brunch destination also makes fantastic waffles—big golden yeasty slabs the size of hub caps, topped with slabs of bacon (aka the praline bacon waffle) and lots of whipped cream.

Amazing southern comfort food. I recommend their crispy fried buttermilk-battered chicken and their token mac and cheese. I am from OK so naturally this was amazing.

Tips for Screen Door

December 14, 2012

I thankfully didn't get the chicken and waffles because it was WAY over the top too much food for one person, though it looked delicious. I ended up getting a trio of side dishes and that was more than enough. The wait, even fairly early in the morning was still a half hour, that's how good their food is. Atmosphere couldn't be any quainter. Service friendly...but busy!

Great food. Good service. It would be nice if they could better manage their clientele to have more realistic wait times. Often, the lines are so long that it's a deterrent to eat there.

We like Screen Door. Lots of reviews here to the contrary.

The staff are .... nondescript. Not rude, not welcoming. The wait, usually long, 30 min to an hour.

While the food isn't reminiscent of YOUR MOM'S southern cookin, it is Southern compared to Oregon cooking and we've always been very pleased with the food, the drinks, and the staff, and if not raining, we are more than willing to wait the 60 min to get a table or to sit at the counter.

We will always eat at Screen Door when we have the time :)

1 star would be generous. These. 1 star would be generous.

These people are dirt bags. I call asking for a reservation. They tell me seating starts at 5.30 no reservation. Be here with your party or you won't be seated. We show up on time, with our COMPLETE party. Turns out they open the doors before 5.30 (thanks for not telling us that), and if you're ahead in line with an incomplete party they'll hold a table indefinitely until they show up... forcing everyone else to wait in their pathetic waiting area. So we were told it was an hour.5 wait with several huge tables empty and unsat when we finally gave up hungry and disappointed.

I don't care how good the food should be if the service is this unreliable walking in the front door. If you want great service and southern food go to Irving St Kitchen in the Pearl.

I just DON'T LIKE RUDE PEOPLE DOESN'T MATTER HOW BUSY !!. This place has to have some of the most rude hostess's I have ever had the experience of speaking to. They are busy busy busy I understand I am a busy person too but that is no excuse to mistreat customers. I can't stand giving my money to people who have no common courtesy. There waiting list is like letting out parolee's its super strict no exceptions you could have been eating there for years and they would still treat you like they are doing you a favor. THIS IS NOT AN EXCLUSIVE NIGHT CLUB IN LA!! It's breakfast in Portland make it enjoyable and if you can't handle the traffic on Burnside open another restaurant or you will have dissatisfied critics like me.

Perfection. My friend who convinced me to move here suggested I go. After waiting almost 45 minutes for a table, we finally sat down. The tables are crowded and noisy but the service was excellent and the food was really good. I would say well worth the wait!

One of my favorite restaurants!. I absolutely love the food at Screen Door! If you are looking for recommendations as to what to order, I can only recommend a few items as they are my absolute favorite and I don't venture away from them at all! Why would I when they are so delicious?

Starters - Hushpuppies & Pimiento Cheese.....so good!

Hot Plate - Crispy Fried Chicken w/Mashed Potatoes & Tasso Ham Gravy (it comes with collard greens but I don't like those so I always give them to my friend who does). I love that the fried chicken is boneless. The gravy is delicious.

Dessert - BAN-OFFEE PIE! If you've never had ban-offee pie and you love banana desserts you should definitely try this! It's really good. I occassionally find myself ordering a slice to go as well.

The only negative that I can say about Screen Door is that you do have to wait in line for a table, as much as I dislike that, I still do it every time I go there. They take reservations for parties of 6 or more which is nice.

Enjoy!

Southern food...Really?. I went with a group of peole to the Screen Door on Sunday. I was excited...at first. I saw the line and thought that I was in for a treat. I don't know what part of the south this food hails from, but it wasn't like any southern cousine I have ever eaten.

I ordered the Screen Door plate so that I could try several things. The red beans and rice were bland, the Jambalaya was hot with out being tasty and the best thing about the pork chop was the hot sauce I added and the cornbread was dry. I sampled a few other menu items from my dinner companions. The trout was pretty decent (NW cousine to me) the mac and cheese was passable. The asparagus was prepared quite well. The only thing that tasted of New Orleans was the Hurricane. I wanted to try the chicken, but the pieces were unidentifiable and looked dry when it was cut into.

I was so upset that I had to wait for over 1/2 an hour for such a mediocre meal.

I was offered dessert, which I could have eaten because I was not full; but I was afraid of what might come out of the kitchen and I wanted to get out of the restaurant before I aged another year.

Not so great food, long wait, bad service. Food: The one item that I liked in most southern restauarants is Jambalaya... the Jambalaya here wasn't good (not rich in flavor)...

We were a group of 6, so we got to taste several of their items... I liked the appetizers (Hushpuppies, fried okra was decent). The Creole Jambalaya was okay, nothing to brag about, however the Crispy Fried Buttermilk-battered Chicken was good. The trout pecan was decent as well.

Comparing to Montage restaurant, it does not even come close (fried chicken was the only one better in Screendoor).

The service is quite ordinary, maybe it was just this server that waited on us.

The wait is quite long (more than an hour on Friday evening).

Parking was easy to find (on Friday evening).
