I've run across some horrid Thai restaurants in Portland (Thai Thai 2, you know who you are), have been served clearly days-old food, and almost gave up on getting decent Thai food. Then I found this place. I don't think a week passes where I don't eat this food. It's always super fresh (we can tell, restaurant people!), really fast and totally delicious. Seriously, this is totally the best Thai I've had in town (I haven't been to many though - and never an expensive one). It's cheap too. Dishes range from 6-11 bucks. They don't skimp on ingredients and the good stuff isn't just crammed in at the top like some take-out places do. You order something with chicken and you'll get mounds of tasty poultry. I'd recommend the garden vegetable, cashew, tofu dish. Man, is that good! Their Pad Thai is excellent too. I've never sat down at the place, so I can't speak of the in-house service, but the checkout help is always very polite, happy and kind and my order is always ready when I pick it up. I LOVE this place.

This is place is a great secret when there are bad Thai restaurants on every corner. It is never busy and always consistent and accurate. We are always surprised that so many people go to Chaba Thai down the street when their food is sometimes so bad you have to throw it out when you get home, or so inconsistent that the 'mild' that you ordered for the kids is so hot it will hurt you. Royal Thai's Tom Kha is so smooth and flavorful. Please try this place! You will never go back to Chaba Thai again.

Pros: Inexpensive, not crowded, good for kids
