A great surprise in Tigard!. We wanted a place to celebrate Mother's Day off the beaten path to avoid crowds. She loves Japanese so I found Maki's and their reviews which were mostly good but a little mixed. We had a great time. The menu was very extensive and well described. My husband's Ton Katsu (?) was too sweet for his taste but everyone else was happy. My mom said it was the best shrimp tempura she ever had. The ambiance was cozy. Definitely a find for our family.
Good sushi, poor teriyaki. Mostly good, but terribly unsatisfying for the price. Plus they had jazz music playing, which wasn't exactly what you're looking for in a sushi restaurant.
operated by real Japanese people..
I have taken people from Japan to Maki and they can't believe how fresh the ingredients are. They are so surprised Tigard has such an authentic Japanese restaurant. The executions of their dishes (even appetizers) are perfect.
Personally, when I eat here I feel I have been transported to Japan and eating in a Japanese restaurant without the cigarette smoke.
Great sushi, wonderful service, authentic.
My wife and I enjoyed another fantastic meal at Maki last night. If you have not been, you have to try it. I have been to all of the top sushi joints in the area (Syun, Hiro, Sinju, etc.) and dollar for dollar, Maki cannot be beat. They have amazing, authentic appetizers (the braised pork butt is amazing..) and the sashimi and rolls are fresh and delicious.
Last night my wife and I had two appetizers (the green beans with bonita flakes were my wife's favorite), two rolls, two orders of nigiri, glasses of wine, all for under $45 with 18% tip. The service was great (although only one server, she did a fantastic job, kept the food coming, water full, etc.).
Cannot recommend this place highly enough, give it a try and you won't be disappointed.
The Next Best Thing to Visiting Japan. With air travel getting more expensive with each passing day I won't be returning to Nagoya anytime soon, let alone Tokyo; thankfully I've got Maki to keep homesickness at bay. They've got the freshest sashimi and sushi in the Metro area, and know how to prepare it. Shiro, the head chef and owner, caters to both native Japanese and those looking for something more adventurous. He knows how to present a nice cut of nigiri, and with a background in fine French dining is always ready to whip up something special for more particular pallets. He, his staff, and Maki are one of the best kept secrets in Portland?give it a try!
long wait. I use to like to go there for lunch sometimes,on my last visit they were kind of busy , had to wait about 45 min ,an apology would be nice and $12 for two side of plain noodles for my kids after 45 min of wait , i ,ll probably go to panda express.
The real deal for a Japanese meal. If you count the typical number of Japanese customers here, you'll believe that this Japanese restaurant is the real deal--not that you wouldn't have figured that out by biting into their truly superior sushi and sashimi. Order the sushi/sashimi for two, and you'll have a beautifully arranged platter of delicious yellowfin, mackerel, tuna, salmon, scallop, shrimp, octopus and whatever else they have that's killer fresh that day. The tempura and teriyaki rocks. This place is for the sushi purist--you won't find a lot of maki rolls, despite the name of the restaurant. And, you'll absolutely not find gloppy mayonaise toppings or disgustingly supersized sushi. Rather, the strength of this small, cozy neighborhood joint is their delicately sweet fish and the art of nigiri sushi and sashimi. Try their Earl Grey flan for a melt-in-your-mouth, unbelievably smooth, subtly flavored treat. (The owner/chef, Shiro, was trained in a classic French restaurant.)
Good sushi it downtownTigard.........hidden away in a small cozy spot..
My spouse and I was at Maki for lunch yesterday. I ordered the sashimi lunch. It was awesome, pieces of tuna, salmon, snapper and yellow tail was nicely arranged on my plate. The fish was fresh and melts in my mouth.
My spouse had the lunch combo. The salmon teriyaki was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The tempura was hot and crunchy. The dipping sauce that came with tempura was excellent....just the right saltiness with a hint of ginger.
Highly recommend for good food. Service a bit slow and prices are on the high end.
Best sushi in/around Portland.. An occasion to celebrate brought us to Maki in Tigard. (reccommended by friends who delivery seafood to restaurants) This place definitely has the best sushi in town. The Snapper with char broiled edge is still on my mind... as is the Spanish Mackerel, scallop, Hamachi and Blue Tuna. Prices are fair for this small intimate restaurant. Friends have tried the salads/soups/hand rolls and have the same rave reviews. We experienced a quiet dining experience at our own pace.... Japanese beers on draft also.
