I really really really want to like this place - cool ambiance, location etc. But there are some things that just can't be overlooked. I haven't had the bad service issues that some other reviewers had, but the overall attitude just sort of lacking something. The food is okay ... the Hawthorne pasta is actually pretty good. But it's just not good enough for the price. Some of the other items I've tried have been of about the same quality as what you'd find at a okay diner. Like I said, I really want to like this place, but just average is all I can muster for a recommendation.

Pros: Cool atmosphere

Cons: Average food, high price

We met some friends for dinner last saturday to catch up after a 16 year separation. I called ahead and was told that reservations weren't necessary for a 6:00 dinner spot. Our friends arrived first and were refused a table until the entire party arrived. Once all four of us were there, we had dinner (not great food, by the way), dessert, and paid the bill. About 15 minutes after the bill was paid (and the tip, of course),our server approached the table and told us that although he had enjoyed our presence, other people would like to eat. In other words, "get out," I was stunned having NEVER before been kicked out of any public place let alone one in which I was a paying customer. We left immediately and noticed that the lobby was empty. Where these hungry customers were, I do not know. The manager has yet to return my call. When I returned to work, I relayed the story to a co-worker and she told me that "Doug Fir is the place to go if you want to be abused a little." So, if you are after mediocre food, decent ambience, and have a penchant for a heaping side of abuse with your garlic mashed potatoes, Doug Fir is your place! I will not be returning; Neither the food nor the service merit another visit.

Pros: clean, well decorated

Cons: the worst service I've ever experienced. Menu items not available
