Don't judge a book by it's cover..
The first time I walked into this place, I already had a problem with it... It's a trendy bar on a trendy street named after a location in
a Kubrick film. Well, after getting over my own insecurities and not being intimidated by the always-present crowd of great-looking, shabby/chic-dressed people sipping infused vodka martinis and chilling out on cool, 60's "pleather" furniture to an endless soundtrack of well-spun soul and house cuts... Oh, and I haven't even mentioned the best part - the patio out back. This is where my co-workers and I end up after closing the restaurant. There is always a great vibe, and they have some of the coolest and cutest bartenders in NoPo. So yeah, in closing, I quickly got over how "cool" the place was, and just got into how cool it is.

Great darn Happy Hour and Smoking Portch.
I had a great time the first time I was there. So much that I'm going back tonight.
It's clean and hip. The music is eclectic without being lame. The waitstaff is attentive but not attention seeking. DJ's seem to show up randomly and mix well. Real Turntables! Imagine that!
I bought the half-japanese for my friend...it was her birthday and she's pretty much there. She liked it. Definitely a great cocktail selection. Alternative and cathartic...although I hate people who over-use the whole catharsis racket.
Smoking portch is awesome...for our nicotene addicted friends, you can't go wrong. Timed space heaters, multitudes of comfy outdoor chairs, good and diverse people. A few alcoves for smokin 1:1 action.
It's the quintesential Portland Happy Hour spot. The bathroom had a unique smell...hence the four. But you can't let a little -1 star drag your night down.
I take no responsibility for poor spelling and will not hesitate to re-chastise anyone who would detract from this review for such a reason.

favorite favorite.
I really like this place more than i expected I would. I live and work in the neighborhood, and usually avoid the newer, fancy-pants
looking joints... but all the people who work there are really nice and the vibe just isn't what you might guess. They have turntables set up and all the bartenders listen to really good music. You never really know what you are gonna get, but it's always good. During the day it is really chill and not busy, so the bartenders always have a minute to talk. I've made a habit of stopping by here on my way home from work. You can get such good drinks for so little money, and the food is really good quality. I guess I'd sum it up by saying that this place might not be for everybody, but I've been needing a place like this since I moved here three years ago.

ahhhh, at last.
I've been to every bar in this stinkin burg sixty times, and it seems that every one that has the slightest bit of style and quality has
been either priced out of my reach, plays crappy pretensious music, or populated by nouveau riche car salesmen from beaverton...until now.
This place is absolutely beautiful with raw cedar on the wall, a curved white concrete bar, and an asian style covered courtyard with eucalyptus trees. They squeeze all the juices and sell their awesome well drinks (monopolowa, beam, dewars, etc.) for FOUR BUCKS! Everyone around me was pleasant accessible, and NOT FROM THE SUBURBS (go figure). Finally good stuff for those of us who deserve it.

Remarkably unpleasant!.
Wow! I've read the other reviews, and I wonder if we're talking about the same place here. When we went to the bar it was almost entirely
empty, save for 3 or 4 people at the bar. The music, extremely bad AM Gold love ballads lacking even in any ironic value, was playing so loud the speakers were vibrating. My friend and I couldn't even hear each other speak. There were empty beer bottles and glasses on the tables, but the bartender obviously wasn't going to bother cleaning anything up, whether or not she had to. When I went to get our drinks, she ignored me for as long as possible, while she had a lazy conversation with somone at the bar - she tried to look as blase about everything as humanly possible.
I'm okay with poor service, but this woman was making a point of showing how little she cared about anyone but her hipster pals at the bar. She wasn't tired, there weren't a lot of people, and it was still early in the evening (about 9pm). When we left, around 10pm, we were the only people in the bar, and the entire staff was watching us, waiting for us to leave. I have no idea what the deal was with this place. I've been to bars all over Portland of varying quality and attitude, and this was the only one where I actually felt snubbed and despised.
Very weird, but the furniture looked cool.
