What Our Expert Scouts Say

Sckavone's Restaurant
March 28, 2013

I overheard all three other customers, probably regulars, order the fried chicken sandwich I followed suit. Smart move. No bacon aioli or anything Portlandiah– but solid comfort food

My family and I have spent thousands of dollars at this restaurant over the last five years (local access). The service has gone steadily downhill. Most of the waitstaff (including the owner) knows us by first name. Today, the waitress didn't write ANYTHING down and messed up my order, which was then another 20 minutes coming. She also delivered and charged us for food we DID NOT ORDER for my grandson. When I talked to the owner about he said to me (In Front Of My Grandson): "don't bitch more than you have to, it's the waitress' first day"... FOUL LANGUAGE in front of a four-year old, and after spending thousands of dollars! The owner said I was making a mountain out of a molehill. When I said "how about if we just don't come back to your restaurant" he said "Fine, Goodbye"..TERRIBLE SERVICE, BAD ATTITUDES TOWARD PEOPLE WHO ARE CONSIDERED "REGULARS".... or used to be.

I like this place. I think the shrimp pasta could use some work, but everything else I've had has been very good . The drinks are nice and strong, and they have a pretty good beer selection. Kudos for not putting in a TV and for letting the wait staff dress their own way. Sometimes just having things be authentic and good raises one's satisfaction above that of the trendy and expected. I just had my birthday there with twenty friends. Thanks.

Cozy Spot. We have enjoyed meeting family and friends at Sckavones. The inviting room, friendly staff & comfort food make it a cozy spot for us. Our favorites are the hummus plate, meatloaf and salads.

Owner feedback on bad situation. The incident described below occurred because the group involved showed up with 45 - 50 people at dinner time instead of the 20 they referenced when the called. We had explained on the phone that we could only handle a group that size. The situation was awkward and stressful for their group, our customers who were already in the restaurant, our staff and confusing for other people who were coming in for dinner.

Handling a group that big is cumbersome and time consuming and it would have forced us to ignore our already seated customers for a half hour or more. I made the decision that protected their experience.

We have been supportive to schools, youth athletics and neighborhood groups including accommodating numberous meetings and gathering at our place. I think anyone who has been on either side of a group event understands the importance of the crisp communications and information needed for everything to work well.

Terrible Management. Do not give your money to this establishment. We made a reservation and children and families were refused at the door. To make it worse the manager was very rude and did not try to apologize or be accommodating.

All we wanted was ice cream for 13 children and when I called to ask what happened the management was irrational and rude. I am a very calm and patient person who works with young children, but actually hung up on this man because of his behavior. Not worth your time. DO NOT give him your money. We will never even consider going there again. They messed up the reservation and no responsibility was taken what so ever. This is not a community establishment and clearly has horrible customer service.

We did however go to Swirl on Hawthorne instead and they were delightful and appreciated the business.

Very good food, good price. We've had one so-so experience, three or four great experiences! Good food, good price. Service has been hit and miss, but again, mostly good. Ironically the worst service we had followed a discussion in the car about whether or not bad service with good food has become the fashion, or the plague. Still, the single event of bad service was an exception here, not the rule.

Check it out, enjoy!

Love, love, love this place!. I love this place! They have great salads and some really wonderful breakfast items. The service is friendly and the atmosphere is chill. I take people here all the time because we never have to wait long and I know they will like their food. Try their chicken and beet salad, it is the best!

tasty food. i had the 3 cheese ravioli with fresh basil and chicken. the dish was somewhat unusual in that at bottom of the bowl the sauce had a more liquid consistency, as opposed to a thick creamy sauce. but this made for excellent dipping with the garlic bread that came with the entree. it was well worth the 11 or so dollars it cost.

we also had an order of fish and chips. the fish and chips were quite good- the fish was not overly battered and the oil was fresh. the included side order of slaw was a bit volumetrically challenged, but it did taste good.

the fresh brewed decaf coffee was ok. the beer was ok too.

service was friendly and helpful.

the atmosphere was good.

good delight to price ratio.

Hidden Gem. We love this restaurant! It is one of those local hidden gems in a funky little neighborhood with great food, great ambience, and a great staff. The food is excellent, as vegetarians, we love to substitute a garden patty for any of the burger choices. We recently had our rehearsal dinner for our wedding held there and the owner was beyond accommodating and the staff was perfectly attentive. Everyone loved the food so much, the wine was flowing, and it was a mellow, wonderful place where people could actually talk and have a good time. It has a very laid-back Portland vibe with a history. We recommend it totally-for a bite to eat on a relaxing date night as well as the perfect venue for a group event. And the prices can't be beat.

We love Sckavone?s!. Great food, at amazing prices. Some of the high lights on the menu for us were the Bacon Cheddar Fries, Pork Loin Chop, and the Sirloin Steak. Oh and almost forgot about the incredible Baked Mac and Cheese. We think this place is a great value and a great piece of east side dinning out culture.
