This sunny Southeast neighborhood guesthouse offers budget-friendly lodging for thrifty tourists..
In Short
This B&B is outfitted with seven guest rooms, each named for an author or musician, along with a large gathering room for dining, relaxing and entertaining. The décor combines vintage charm with modern character, and a cozy feel that invites guests to relax with a book or over conversation with fellow guests during the daily continental breakfast.
All good except for the apples. This was my first experence at a guest house, and I loved it. The Blue Bird was way better than a hotel, but it isn't good for a honeymoon. The walls are kind of thin, but this place was awesome. Immagine you are staying at a friend's house while they are away; that's what the Blue Bird is like. I am totaly planning to visit again. The only down side is that the apples they provide for breakfast were old and mealy.
Simple, inexpensive place to stay. My husband and I stayed here for 4 days in August (summer is their busiest time). We stayed in the Elliott Smith room in the basement. Our room was very clean and simple. All the decorations and furniture in the house is sort of retro but very nice. The kitchen (which you share with the other guests) is large and you can store stuff in the fridge if you need. There was tea, coffee, and juice available for everyone and in the morning there were some nice pastries. Although the other rooms were booked we saw the other guests very infrequently and we saw the owners (who don't live there) only once so it was kind of like having the whole house to ourselves. It's within walking distance of Hawthorne and there are some nice restaurants and coffee shops on Division as well. It was cheaper than a hotel and the house has much more character than any hotel I've ever stayed in. If we hadn't moved to Portland we definitely would have stayed here again. My only complaint (and not a very significant one) is that the dryer in the basement (which you pay for) took 3 rounds to dry our clothes.
