What Our Expert Scouts Say

March 15, 2013

Who among us is from, or has been to, the Balkans? So maybe this is what Balkan cuisine tastes like, but either way, it tastes great. Dishes youve seen at Turkish/Greek places, so pretty much anything with ground lamb, spinach, and feta, wrapped up any which way, and you'll be happy

Serves authentic Balkan cuisine like chevapi and burek along with Turkish coffee. You’ll think you’re in Stari Grad.

Best Goulash in Town. I love this little place, the staff are always so friendly and the food is so authentic Eastern European. But the best thing is their Goulash, stuffed cabbage (Sadly only served in the Winter).

I recommend this little place to everyone.

grilled meats. Good value for the price. Ambiance is lacking. French fries were freshly made. Child friendly. Ample parking.

Some aspects good, needs improvement overall. My husband and I shared a platter of assorted meats. That part was very good, and I think the cooks were likely competent with Serbian food (I have not had Serbian before so I cannot make any comparisons). What was off were the details. Our food was served with frozen crinkle cut french fries that were fried in very ranc*d oil. The fries had that telltale ranc*d fishy flavor and it was quite strong. Overall I guess I just felt there was not a lot of intention with what they were doing, and the details, left something to be desired. To make it in SE, where there are so many good ethnic restaurants, I think they should consider ditching the thoughtless americanized aspects of their menu - fries (especially frozen), bottled minute maid juices, iceberg lettuce, and instead focus on showing us what their culture has to offer in terms of a whole dining experience, with higher quality ingredients. And replace the ranc*d oil!

Bona fide Serbian comfort food welcomes patrons in an unexpected corner of SE Portland.. In Short
The cuisine at this casual eatery offers a taste of home to some and a perfect way to shake up the usual takeout routine for others. Staples include mounds of Eastern European meats (Polish sausage, chops and grilled kebabs), comforting carbs (dense Serbian-style cornbread and flatbreads), soothing goulash and airy crepes. The sparse decor includes Formica-topped tables, but the space is warmed up considerably by the affable owners and easygoing clientele.
