You can't go wrong with their original milk chocolate fondue (mixed with peanut butter) but if you're feeling daring, you can also dip your cheesecake, strawberries etc. into their Flaming Turtle fondue (milk chocolate, caramel...) need I say more?
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO US! – From the moment I reserved our special night to paying for the meal the service was outstanding. I put a note in to our Maitre'd that it was our Wedding Anniversary and the lady who checked us in let us know as well as our seater. Then the waitress, Caitlin, also congratulated us along with a card and her own message in chocolate on a plate that was brought out with dessert fondue.
They obviously considered the occassion because we had a private table with a draw curtain that made it that much more intimate.
It's been 5 yrs. since we were last here for our anniversary and just as outstanding, if not better, then we remember.
Perfect amount of food with the "Big Night Out" and priced fairly. Went well with a bottle of 14 Hands Cabernet Sauvignon!!!
paying far too much to cook your own food. – Awful. The fondue was bitter and gross, the meat was served raw and then you had to boil it in water. Ended up spending $79 on very little - we even left still hungry.
First-timers will return!! – My wife and I went to the Melting Pot for the first time for her birthday in March. We embarked on a four course dinner including dessert at the end. It was amazing, made more special by our waitress, Caitlin Van A... She was almost as amazing as the food. Very helpful. She explained to us when to go all out and when to hold back on certain courses of the meal, so as not to fill up too soon in anticipation of what was next. Who does that? So awesome! We had a wonderful time, and hope to come back soon. Maybe we'll find out if Caitlin is working the week we want to go next, and choose the same day-ha ha. You must come to this place!
Best Anniversary I've Ever Had – I'm not one of those people who write reviews, but for The Melting Pot... I just had to.
My boyfriend and I have always liked to think we were spontaneous in everything we do...especially when it came to food! ;) So when I heard about The Melting Pot and how they do fondues and all this what not, I was just confused...but mostly intriqued by all the reviews with the help of research and friends. Knowing that it was our 2 year anniversary coming up, I got excited and booked a reservation for the two of us last night.
Knowing how he was, I knew he wasn't happy that the surprise was in Downtown Portland (one way streets) but we made it in a super convienent parking lot right across from where The Melting Pot was.
The minute we stepped into the door, the front desk was very welcoming and warming. The whole front desk had mentioned "Happy Anniversary" which really showed us they cared. The host lead us to cozy table which had a rose for us set up in the corner where we could have our alone time which was nice as well and also got a picture taken and framed. I thought that was super sweet.
We were greeted by our server, Caitlynn, who was spectacular. Very well spoken and clear about everything. Helped us customise our entrees and over all experience which is great for my indicisive personality! We were then greeted by general manager, Sean...who was just hilarious and very intuituve about his work place and the environment. He interacted with us about what he was doing with the mixing of the cheese fondue, and about how he loves working at the Melting Pot. I found it refreshing and I could tell in the staff themselves. Even going to the restroom, I ran into 5 employees and they all greeted me with warm smiles and one stopped to show me to the bathroom. I really could tell this staff were like a family and I could feel it.
The food was amazing. I mean, it was well presented, and delicious. Not too over whelming. The cheese fondue was mouth watering, the main entree was just enough to keep us full and right when we thought we couldn't fit anymore food in, we HAD to get in the smore's chocolate fondue. oh...my... goodness. I'm just letting you guys know, i'm going to say it, it was orgasmic. I recommend that one to anyone!
Overall, it was a wonderful experience.
My boyfriend and I had a great Anniversary and not only did we connect again and laugh...but we connected with the place and the people.
Great Place – This is the place that my fiancee and I went for our first date, so it will always hold a special place in both of our hearts. I see a lot of negative reviews on The Melting Pot, and I must say, this was not our experience. While the price was high, the food was great.
I want to say before I go any further, anyone who goes to a FONDUE restaurant and expects not to cook their own food needs to consider their lot in life and stop attempting to live outside of it. I know that sounds really mean, but I have seen one too many reviews from people complaining about it.
The staff, when we went last year, was amazing. They really paid attention to us, even though we showed up in jeans and t-shirts with no reservations at all. They did not look at us and make any unnecessary judgments. It was nice that we could be comfortable at a place like this. We went on a whim, and are going back on our first anniversary this Saturday. This time we may actually dress better.
The food was fantastic. We got a wide variety of things to try. Cooking it ourselves was also a lot of fun. I had never eaten some of the things we had, so it was nice to be able to try new things. The desert at The Melting Pot is the reason I do not want to have cake at our wedding this November; I want fondue instead.
Not everyone will like The Melting Pot. Some will look at the price and the fact that it is a fondue restaurant and not be happy with it at all. Like other food products, fondue is not something that everyone can appreciate. If you have had fondue and you like it, try The Melting Pot. If you have never had fondue, try The Melting Pot, just realize that fondue involves cooking your own food. If you do not like fondue, go to a different restaurant.
The OK food doesn't match the outrageous price – I wasn't sure what to have, so the server recommended the overall favorite: Cheddar fondue.
The fondue itself was ok. Just ok. The bread was this overly gourmet artisan bread, which had zero taste. It also came with apples. Apples? I was hoping that maybe they knew something that I didn't. No, it tasted just like what it was, cheese on apples.
I also ordered those little lobster/caviar appetizers. They were ok. They tasted kind of fattening.
For happy hour, it was ok. For anything else, it would be a complete ripoff. The quality didn't match the cost.
Fool me once shame on you.... – Good idea? Yes. Would they survive if just ONE competitor came into the picture...I'd bet my LIFE that they would NOT. Here's why....
Anybody can make fondue like they do. Goodness, I've made better fondue in 9th grade home eq. class! The ingredients are mediocre and so is the chef. Is the food disgusting? No---I would go there if I HAD to. Is it anything to write home about? No. There is nothing spectacular about the food. You know what I'm talking about, when you try a bite off someone else's plate and you GOTTA have another? Yeahhh...don't expect that here.
Not to mention, the prices are waaaay too high for the quality. For $50/ person I would much rather go to a nice steakhouse.
Don't be an idiot and don't waste a penny here.
Nice and unusual dining experience – We have always wanted to try the Melting Pot for the fondue experience. Before visiting our only experience was with some melted cheese at Gustavs. The service at this restaurant was top of the line. You should definitely get a reservation if you are planning on visiting a friday or saturday night. The food was excellent. However; we were not big fans of the cheese fondue we had (it had blue cheese, cheddar, and something else I think). The steak and the tuna items were fantastic. The drinks from the bar had fresh fruit and were very good. We will be back.
Awesome anniversary experience – My girlfriend and I went there last night for our anniversary. It was my first time there, and was very skeptical about fondue in general, let alone an entire restaurant devoted to it. However, I was very impressed with my experience.
To start, the service was excellent. Even when I made my reservations, it was immediately clear that they genuinely want to help you have a personal and memerable time. They had options to add balloons, champagne (or cider), or flowers, and they all come with a picture and a frame (though it's just a simple cardboard). They asked what the occassion was and catered to it. The hostess was very polite and helpful.
When we arrived, we did have to wait for a table despite the restaurant being virtually empty. But when seated, we were taken to a secluded corner where there was only one other booth next to us (I'm sure this was because they knew it was our anniversary). Waiting was a single red rose in a vase (which I added on, and was kind of spendy at $22), as well as a card (which I was not expecting). The hostess immediately took a GREAT picture of us and promptly returned with it in a frame.
The waiter, Tom, was extremely helpful and knowledgable. He explained the menu (which can be a little overwhelming), recommended drinks and was very professional.
The cheese/starter fondue was awesome. It came with bread, sliced apples and vegetables and everything tasted very good. It was also cool watching him prepare the cheese. The salads were very good, and the dessert was amazing. We got the flaming turtle, which is milk chocolate, caramel and pecans. It's called that because the waiter lit some 151 on fire and poured the flames into the fondue, which was way cool. They served a plate of fruits and little desserts (like oreo covered marshmallows) which were great. The fondue was a little rich, but so good.
The main course was good, but I found the red meat (sirloin and filet mingon) to be bland and without much flavor. They are slightly seasoned, and they do bring you a plethora of different sauces; but after cooking it in vegetable broth, the meat ended up tasting like vegetble broth. They do offer different flavors of broths to cook in, though. The lobster and shrimp were excellent.
It's definitely a different dining experience, and if you want to go somewhere for conventional steak or seafood, this isn't it. Plan on being there for awhile; we were there for 2 1/2 hours and left right after dessert. It's also very expensive, and I wouldn't recommend going there unless it's a special occasion.
great service, wonderful food – We've came here twice for our anniversary. It's fun to do the whole fondue thing and the service was great as was the food. I especially liked the choclate fondue dessert platter and the cheese fondue. I didn't like so much dipping the raw meat into the broth but my husband did. It's very expensive. Bring around $100 for a couple if you want to do the full meal with dessert, best to save for special occasions if on a budget.
