Good Sushi - Decent Service. I went to bay 13 with my boyfriend last night - we went a few months ago and weren't terribly impressed but it's close by so we figured we'd give it another shot. Last time we we went it felt like the menu didn't match portland, let alone the pearl, so we were happy to see some sushi and snacks back on the menu. Our service was a little spotty, we waited a while between courses and for some more bread but our waitress was pleasant enough and gave us a great recommendation on wine to go with our sushi - which was definately worth coming back for. All in all I'm glad Bay 13 is in the hood.
Can't wait to go back!. I met some friends for a few cocktails and ended up splitting a few entrees in the bar. (These are great to share as another option to the appetizer menu). Looking for some comfort food, we went with the Braised Short Ribs?the perfect choice. The ribs were perfectly tender and served on a mound of creamy mashed potatoes and finished with some nicely sauteed green beans. (Might just have to have this again tomorrow). Another friend ordered the scallops. The menu description didn?t grab my attention but it was very nicely done. The scallops were melt in your mouth delicious. They were served on what seemed to be an odd pairing (sweet potatoes??) but it worked perfectly! We had a few of our favorites (the King Roll and the spicy Edamame) as well. For desert our server suggested the Coconut Panna Cotta. Since I?m not a Flan/Creme Brule/Panna Cotta fan, I opted to drink my desert (Spanish Coffee, nice!). However, once I saw my friend?s Panna Cotta covered in a mound of toasted cashews, I decided to give it a try. Wow! Not that I need to have another ?favorite dessert? but this was seriously the best dessert I?ve had in a long time. It was served perfectly chilled with toasted coconut. Yum! Four of us shared the food above for a perfect light dinner in the bar. We?ll be back!
poor quality food.
My husband and I went to Bay 13 on 3/8. We had a high expertation for Bay 13 , but it turns out very disspointing. We both decide not to go there anymore.
1) We ordered a dozen of oysters, 3 of 12 oysters were too tiny to dig out any meat. We asked waitor to return this dish, he did. We just wondered how the chef let those uneatable oysters delivered to customers. Because they aretaking chance or they jsut don't care. This is way out of common sense.
2) The bread was cold and not fresh. Isn't the purpose of using napkin to wrap bread is because the bread is supposed to be hot ????
3) soup was too salty
4) Entree was too salty to eat.
Bay 13 has been ranked as $$$, so it's really not worth to go there again to have poor quality of food.
i'd go again, but maybe just to the bar area. great atmosphere, good food, but pricey for the quantity. i thought the staff was freindly. seemed like there were a ton of servers swarming the floor. it's not the relaxing type of dining experience, but enjoyable overall.
What happened? and don't ask the manager.... We can only agree with the previous review. The new menu is lackluster and turned us off right away. We used to visit this restaurant several times a month, for lunch and dinner. The last time we went we stayed for a cocktail and then left due to poor menu choices. On our way out we spoke with the dining room manager and shared our disappointment and to say how much we had loved the Tombo tuna dishes, the ahi poke, the sweet potato fries etc and his response, rather than a polite Thank You, was "We can't pay the rent with tombo tuna!!" Oh well, it sure appeared that a full bar and restaurant serving tombo tuna will pay the rent easier than an empty dining room and a sparse crowd in the bar on a Friday night with the new menu. I encourage you to stay away until they go back to the real Bay 13.
Terrible Menu Changes.
Bay 13 used to be the best fresh fish and sushi restaurant downtown. The new menu is lack luster, over priced and the food pairings are terrible. We went to Bay 13 on Friday night and left after only ordering appetizers. The appetizers were terrible! The items from the raw menu were covered in various sauces to mask the true flavor of the fish, which led us to believe the fish was either old or of poor quality.
This place used to be so busy but the place was empty and I think that is a reflection of the menu changes. Word of advice: Go back to the menu that brought people in the door! You had a great thing going and now....well it is just BAD.
Best Seafood In PDX. Ate at Bay 13 on Saturday night. Everything was unreal. The food is so much better than it used to be. The new selections of Raw instead of Sushi are great. Would recomend to anybody.
Great service...terrible food....
So, I went to this "new hot spot" last weekend with a group. First of all, I didn't bring my reading glasses and the menu is written in such small and light font, I couldn't read it. A friend suggested eveything I ordered and it was cold, flavorless and expensive.
I wouldn't make a specail trip here again.
If I worked in the area, I may go after work for a drink with friends as it does have an upbeat atmoshere, but other than that.....No Way!!!
Good luck with the rent in the Pearl Bay 13.
New Chef in town. I went to Bay13 after hearing that they have a new chef. I found out that he is from NY. We were pleasantly surprised at the changes that have occured on the menu. Ahi tuna seared with parsnip puree melted in my mouth. The presentation looked like something out of a big city and the food matched. The oysters are the freshest I have had while visiting from CA. I can see that the little bit of changes are going to be big for this beautiful restaurant. Now the food matches the decor.
Super Service, Good food. Went on a Wednesday night with another couple. Service was outstanding. I feel they could expand the cocktail menu but really like how they serve complimentary glass, bottled water at the table. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the entire menu and made good suggestions. Since a Wednesday night not too crowded but I could see it being noisy when full. We'll definitely go back.
