What Our Expert Scouts Say

Trade Up Music
May 06, 2013

The bars on the windows of this big corner instrument store are a bit daunting, but there's some precious musical cargo within. They also offer repairs, lessons, and have quite a few guitars with full setups for under $100, great if you're just starting out.

Trade Up acts as both a blessing and a. Trade Up is a favorite among Portland musicians and it's easy to discern why: quality gear at affordable prices, approachable staff, and an impressive selection of guitars and drum equipment. If you aren't quite to "musician" status yet, they'll help you get there with private music lessons.

awesome selection, great service!. Helpful staff, lots of selection, no attitude! The people who work here are just so dang nice! It is a well known fact in my musician's household that this store is THE BEST! And they buy used instruments too. major win!

Selling Instruments That They Wouldn't Buy Themselves. I went in to buy a Jaw's harp, thinking the folks at Trade-Up music would have as good or better taste than me in all kinds of unusual instruments. Turns out that they only sell a "novelty" jaw's harp that the employees wouldn't even buy themselves - they buy their jaw's harps somewhere else. Of course, I wasn't told this until I tried to return the low quality jaw's harp, and they refused to give me a refund or credit because of "state law".

When I recommended they take down the "novelty" harps, or at least sell a different kind, the owner told me "they've sold it for eight years". So I guess that explains it?

My (and every one I can convince) boycott of trade-up music starts now. Stop selling stuff you wouldn't buy yourselves, guys.
