Even early on a Monday night, Toro Boro is brimming with chatty customers in low lighting, sampling the Paella Toro with chicken, clams, chorizo, shrimp, and mussels while the small kitchen clanks and bustles. Take someone you would like to impress--think a future mother-in-law, or a promising prospect from OKCupid.

Even movie stars have had to wait for Spanish inspired tapas by John Gorham. Bring 7 or more and get a reservation, or come before 6pm for small plates like Grilled Moorish Lamb Chops or Chicken & Clams Cataplana.

Somehow, 7 days a week, 360-something days a year, this venerable tapas joint STILL fills to capacity every single night. So plan accordingly, and consider a cocktail at The Secret Society upstairs if the wait’s particularly egregious.
Olive oil poundcake with blood orange caramel. Good, but a heavier hand with the sauce would not have hurt, frankly.
Eating in a closet but good food. My friend told us about Toro Bravo so we decided to give it a try. When we walked in it was already starting to get busy and the only tables available were on the side in this cramped alcove. Looking back we should have waited for a table because it was like eating in a closet. They could've at least cut a window or something in the wall. We basically were staring at a wall that was 3 feet in front of our faces. Anyways, we decided to just order the chefs menu to save time because we had tickets to a concert. We told our waitress we had to go at a certain time and they made sure that all our food was prompt, which was nice. All the food was great but the oxtail was a little salty but again that may be my own taste. I will try Toro Bravo again but next time in the table area.
Rude hostess. First time food was great and worth the wait. Second time, the hostess was incredibly rude. The french kisses are very good.
Wouldn't go back. We were pretty excited about dinner given the reviews that we've read/ratings that we've seen. The service was very slow....the waitress even admitted that she forgot to place our first order! The most surprising thing was the server who put her hand on the plate as I was putting food on my fork. Seriously, who grabs a plate when people are in the middle of eating. I obviously didn't want it cleared and the last time that I checked, there was not a plate shortage in Portland so I think that leaving my wife and I alone for a few minutes would've been the least that she could've done. Food was okay, way too fried and nothing to write home about for the most part. The wine was great, but that is about it. Not very impressed overall. If you're in the mood for Tapas....please try Navarre (SO much better!!)
I'm done with this place. I've been here 3 times over the past 2 years, and it's official, there is a large portion of this town that has no idea about real quality, and just follows the flock/media. This place does not have good food. We ordered between the three of us about a dozen items (we dropped well over $200.00 before tip, although we did drink some very tasty wine), and the only thing positive to say was the oxtail croquettes weren't as bad as the meatballs. The "French kisses" were the only thing worth repeating, but at $2 a piece they get pricey fast. The Manchego fritters were easily the biggest joke. They were the size of my thumbnail, and you get about 7-9 of them for $6. I thought someone was playing a joke. The charcuteria (their spelling) board was ample-ish in size, but once again the flavors were just blah. I could go on, but you get the idea. This place stays busy, but it can't be long before people figure it out that the quality just isn't there. I for one will never go back, no matter who begs and even if they're paying this time.
bad food !.
Toro Bravo features tapas- the idea is to order several of the small portioned (and expensive) dishes. The problem I had was tiny tables that became quickly cluttered with the many plates involved in tapas. The atmosphere was chaotic and the meal involved excessive interaction with the waitstaff. This was obnoxious and there was no sense of privacy or rest.
The food was mediocre at best. I had some kind of fried cheese that was flavorless. Also an extremely oily salad and a flatbread that salt was surely spilled on.
We were seated at a table that shouldn't have been used- it received strong blows of cold air each time someone came or went.
I will say the lighting was nice and the staff were efficient and friendly, albeit overly attentive.
One of my top 3. This place has not failed me yet in the 7 times I have gone for special occasions. Everything I get has been just superb. I do not, however, compare them to Spanish tapas in Spain as there simply can not be an equal (as I don't compare gelato here to that in Italy). As a restaurant in Portland, they are the best. Their food, such as the sauteed Brussels sprouts in a bacon sherry cream sauce, the coppa steak, the french kisses, and the ever so delicious bacon wrapped dates drizzled with honey, have never failed me. Go. Now.
Worth every minute we had to wait!!!. This place is fantastic. The paella is awesome so were the other 5 or 6 items we tried. We arrived at 6:45 on a Monday and were told we would have to wait an hour. We sat outside at one of the few small tables, had a few appetizers and ended up waiting only about 30 minutes. The food was delicious and was brought out at different times which I really enjoyed. Just don't come here if you're in a hurry or don't like waiting - you will be annoyed. If you able to go with it you will be heavily rewarded.
terrific food and service. The hostess was nice, we had to wait for a table but oh was it worth it! My drink was delicious, the food was incredible and the service was attentive and efficient. Everyone was so nice. We sat at the chefs bar at the back wall and it was really rather intimate. We will go again and again! You must try the squid ink pasta so yummy. Bravo!
