Editorial Review for Clyde Common – by Elizabeth Lopeman
In Short
Clyde Common's chic, comfortable and open atmosphere adds a glimmering facet to the great downtown Portland restaurant selection. The fresh, eclectic menu changes daily and includes twists on old standbys such as albacore tuna salad with hardboiled egg and aioli, and ventures into epicurean creativity with items such as scallop crudo with pepper jelly. Desserts are creative, like a fig and cornmeal cake with sweet corn ice cream and almond tuile.

I went with a group of friends for a good bye party. We were told that groups were restricted to 12 only so had to disinvite 2 people only to have 5 -6 empty seats next to us all evening. In addition, there were other empty tables. It took over half an hour to get drinks, including water, over an hour to get salads. When asking questions about the wine list I was told by the waiter that he "didn't have time to chit chat about wine". The food was okay but not out of the ordinary. We had to remind the wait staff twice that one member of the party was still waiting for her entree. For a restaurant in Portland, the local selection of wines was disappointingly small and limited. The food not impressive enough to go back and the service extremely slow and disinterested. Overall, not a place I would recommend or go back to.

Had the occasion to go here three times over a short time period. I think the menus were different each time. A good place to sample some unique combinations, appetizers and cocktails; which means you might find something you really like, or it might just be a miss. Some are standard tapas fare like codfish cakes, and others are more adventurous. They certainly get points for effort and creativity. Service was adequate at the bar, and good in the dining areas. I didn't get the sense that the service was inattentive, but appropriately inobtrusive. I'm not a big fan of communal dining, but there is some nice small group seating upstairs. Would definitely go again.
Pros: Varying menu, unique combinations
Cons: A little crowded at times; hard to get a seat
