In Short – Clyde Common's chic, comfortable and open atmosphere adds a glimmering facet to the great downtown Portland restaurant selection. The fresh, eclectic menu changes daily and includes twists on old standbys such as albacore tuna salad with hardboiled egg and aioli, and ventures into epicurean creativity with items such as scallop crudo with pepper jelly. Desserts are creative, like a fig and cornmeal cake with sweet corn ice cream and almond tuile.
Rudeness rather than Reservations
by cbusch0914
Clyde Common is unique because, when I called, the boy I spoke to told me he was "very busy" and hung up before I could make a reservation. Guess I won't get a table there... oh well!
- Pros: Unknown
- Cons: Poor phone manners
Generally excellent, innovative food, but FAR TOO NOISY!
by michaelrh
Hanger steak was excellent; carrot gnuti far too bland. BMOC drink was excellent; "Beginning of the End" was not.
The service was knowledgeable, but a bit slow, even tho' restaurant wasn't full. Five of the six dinners in our party were excellent (hanger steak, trout, lamb, pasta), but the carrot gnuti was bland, and a very small serving for $20.
- Pros: Excellent, innovative food
- Cons: Way too noisy; hard to hear waiter, anyone
Great Food, average service
by UltimateFoodLover
I really thought the food was great. It seems very inventive and freshly original. Even items that I don't particularly like (like beets) were good in the preparation. No complaints there. I ate all of my hen (?) and wanted another one! The rest of my party really enjoyed their burgers. They say they are the best burgers in town.
Now, as far as the service, that's another thing. I'm not saying that the service is bad. What I'm saying is that there was no warmth. I don't think she ever smiled at us or really looked as us. It was just kinda blah, like robotic. If the table gets cleared and nothing goes wrong, then I guess it's okay. I just feel like the experience would have been much more top notch had the server acted like she wanted to be there.
I do have to mention though, there was a guy bartender who I asked for a taste of something. He was really friendly and excited about telling me about the product. Maybe I should sit at the bar next time.
- Pros: Really interesting and good food, lots of alcohol
- Cons: Service just OK
