What Our Expert Scouts Say

Zilla Sake House

Adorable date spot it is, and the more saké you drink, the more adorable the other will be. Nab a large 12 oz. pitcher of saké from a list of the largest in-house premium selection in Oregon.

Inside Zilla Sake House is an interior that has handmade artisan touches throughout, an extensive sake list and some of the tastiest sushi from ( affectionately labeled) Sushi Nazi herself. The prices are as refreshing as the waters these fish swim in.

Northeast Alberta’s sweet little saké and sushi bar, has curb appeal that extends to the hip interior, and the kitchen dishes up comforting flavors and a sake list so long it’ll surely impress your arm candy.

Worse misstake ever!. Awful! Over price, pieces way too small for what do you pay. Also it wasnt even that good. I wont ever go back or recommend this place.

Dont waste your time and money, they are so many sushi places out there to try and much better than this crap!

AWESOME. Zilla Sake rocks my socks! Not only do they offer scintillating variety but also reasonable prices. They have a heart about what fish they harvest and how much the offer while being conscious providers. Not to mention, their wait staff is knowledgeable and fantastic. I love Zilla Sake!

Great food, less than adequate service. Loved the atmosphere. Food was yummy and reasonable. They had a female sushi chef, right on! Female server with accent seemed not to be interested in giving good service. We had to flag her down several times. I used to be a server and quite honestly, they weren't that busy. I would suggest you go on a weeknight or off time. I do recommend the place despite the service.

Service Bad; Food Great. When we walked in the sushi chef looked at us if to ask if we were cool enough to eat in her restaurant. One of the servers was sweet, the other rude! rude! rude! She got our sake flight order wrong and when we mentioned it, she tried to tell us what we had really ordered. They messed up one of the rolls, but somehow got it right on the bill. Had to ask to have a bottle refill of water and another roll. Asked the server who asked the sushi chef if we could make a change (making a handroll a cut roll) the chef looked at the server (with the very same look of disgust) and said loudly No!

The food was great--a little pricey, but not too bad. I am very sorry that we won't be going back.

fabulous sake and Service. This is a cozy little restaurant that is not fussy but has an air of relaxation. The server was able to recommend some great Sake and it was fabulous!! The sushi was some of the best I have ever tasted. The sushi chef the night we were there used some local ingredients to make it her own. Will return there often.

Cozy, artist, chill, bar. I went to Zilla for the first time last night. It was a fantastic place to chill with my friend. The comment about the slow, hipster, service was true. But to be honest I kind of found it refreshing, like the staff was content to let us stay there as long as we wanted. They defiantly weren't snobby, just mellow and u-intrusive. It is a very moody setting and has a lot of neat stuff to complete its atmosphere. The menu of sake was extensive and the staff was good at helping us wade through it. The food menu was very health considerate, which I also appreciated. I recommend this place for a mellow evening with friends.

Great sake, great atmosphere. Great place. I don't really know much about sake, so I ordered the flight to get a sampling. My server was really knowledgeable and explained the different kinds of sake (my favorite was the Taiheikai), what made each taste different and even some historical background on some of the rice. Very impressive.

I really liked the decor and vibe as well. Laid-back, but slightly boisterous (if that's possible). Dim and cozy with nice art and subtle accents.

WTF? Stupid hipster waiters.. So we went to this place tonight after reading about it in "Mix" and hearing great things around town. Too bad nobody said that this place is run by a bunch of people who act too good to do their freaking job. We waited 15 minuted for someone to take our order, and then they forgot part of our sushi order and the food part had shut down in the mean time. The sake was okay, but our waitress disappeared with her boyfriend to the front of the bar and never came back. We had to settle up at the bar and she had fouled up our ticket. Maybe if she had a few less holes in her head, she could function better to do her job? Just a thought.

My new favorite spot. I'm an Alberta local and really grateful to have Zilla Sake House to wonder over to. I've been stopping by since they've opened and watched how they've keep it innovative and fresh. The first time I stopped in I was mostly impressed by the decor created by local Oregon artists--even a recycled pool table slate as the bar top! I love that the place doesn't look like every other Portland "branding" of what a cool spot is supposed to look like. Secondly, of course, was the sake selection. I never realized what a wide range of fragrances and flavors sake had to offer. I've made it a game now to try a different one each time I go in. And now I have a hard time drinking anything else, with the absence of sulfites and gluctose, it's so much cleaner and my body doesn't pay for it. They recently changed their free Japanese film night to Mondays and are now closed on Sundays, making it the best place to go on Alberta on a Monday night! The talent and scene on Tuesday's open mic is amazing. The food menu changes when local veggies are in season and they use many local and organic products. I was there one time when they even had veggies from the owner's dad's organic farm! Their dishes have become more creative, yet still simple and true to Japanese cuisine with traditional snacks like pickled veggies, ika, japanese style curry and the best organic miso soup! Oh, and I wish people knew about their happy hour. It's perfect for after work and they now have food and sake parings.

I've been to other japanese food/sake places in town and Zilla's prices are by far the best in terms of both quality as well as quantity. In fact, I don't drink sake anywhere else (except at home-they have a retail license too) because I can learn about it, costs less, and I can walk home. Plus I like the people. It's so mom and pop, albiet a super cute young mom and pop, but you know what I mean. They are passionate and know their stuff.

Top sake selection in Portland. Open Mic and Movie nights!. This is one of the best night spots in Portland, away from the crowds and posturing of the west side of town.

Zilla Sake is relaxed, friendly, plays great music and has a delicious selection of Japanese bar food. It even smells like an authentic izakaya!

The staff are passionate and knowledgeable about their sake, but also cater to other tastes with a full bar.

The decor is unique, with beautiful details like the glass and metal lamps, and the gorgeous, COMFORTABLE custom made booths!

One of the best things about it is the Sunday night Japanese film screenings and the Tuesday night open mic, where you can see an incredible range of Portland's more underground talent perform. Not to be missed!

This could quickly become your local hangout.
