My favorite Indian restaurant in downtown Portland. I love the lunch buffet, where you can load your plate (for $7) with a large selection of consistently good food, fresh naan, and seat yourself service.

The Best Indian Food in Portland -- By Far!. Indian is my favorite cuisine and I have tried every Indian restaurant in Portland and every food cart, some multiple times. The Tandoor is the best at any price. The fried foods are crisp and fresh tasting and not greasy. The sauces are creamy and luscious. Ample great vegetarian choices. When they first opened they didn't provide much meat in the meat dishes, but now they do. It used to be cold and uncomfortable, but now it has lovely booths. I usually don't like steam table buffet lunches, but theirs is a fantastic feast. Dinners are so generous and delicious it's amazing. I can't see why anyone goes anywhere else for Indian food! I'm sorry to hear one reviewer was disappointed, but they are not "slipping," they are getting better all the time. And one thing that couldn't be improved is the fine service from welcoming, charming staff.

Used to be good..no any more. This place has really slipped up When it originally opened I was a frequent patron to the lunch buffet. Today I went there and found the food to be lacking in quality. Furthermore I found the service to be slow(I couldn't even get them to fill my water up), and the staff cold and unfriendly.

Hi,

I would like to know what dishes you had on 8/21 lunch buffet. Also what quality was missing in them.

We are using fresh vegetables for all our cooking, the dishes are prepared from scratch after 8:30AM for every lunch buffet. And it is always been prepared by me, so I don't see any change in how the food is prepared or the quality of ingredients used. We guarentee the best quality food served from our kitchen.

More details will help us make changes to the system.

Thank You

Ramesh

Good Indian Food. We've been looking for a good Indian food joint for a while now and I think we finally found it. We went there for lunch today and left very impressed. The food was excellent. It had great flavors and lovely colors. I highly recommend Tandoor's authentic Indian food.

Extraordinary portions and friendly service. The food is delicious. The food is freshly made with fresh ingredients. This place stands out among Indian restaurants for its huge portions and, among restaurants in general, for its extremely friendly service. It's a great deal and feel-good eating experience.

Best Indian Food Ever. I found Tandoor during a trip to the Portland area, and I am extremely glad I gave it a try. I come from the SF Bay Area (Berkeley), and Indian is one of my favorite cuisines, so it is saying a lot when I assert that the food from Tandoor is by far the best Indian food I've ever had. The portions were large (HUGE), the food was 100% fresh, and the service was outstanding.

The palaak was well flavored, the paneer was extremely fresh, and there was ample delicious masala filling inside our dosa.

Very clean establishment, Good food, good service, great tasting Indian food. I have always been a fan of Indian food, but rarely eat it. After finding Tandoor on citysearch, I tried out the weekday lunch buffet. The owner (I believe), is very nice and is seen moving about the dining area making sure everything is to the customers' satisfaction. The food itself is quite good, tasted fresh, looked good, and for being an all you can eat buffet, relatively cheap. All in all I enjoyed it, and will probably go back, but this time with some friends.

PLEASE READ!!. Most reviews are suspect, given the non-reviewed nature of this site. So some disclaimers. I am not associated with this resturant or any other. I only like GREAT FOOD!!! So that being said, THIS PLACE IS GREAT!!! Not being of Indian descent, for me to say that is quite a feat. I've eaten at a lot of Indian resturants with not much good to say. These guys, however, use fresh ingredients and work hard to please. My kids and I went just after the local paper review and although they were busy and the dinner took longer than my kids could handle, BUT the food was fantastic. We made the mistake of ordering TOO MUCH FOOD. Vegetarians have a great selection. Non-vegetarians are just a pleased with the selection. Kids loved the food as well, even my picky eater. I am lactose intolerant and did not have problems of course being careful to ask for nondairy foods. So, do not go expecting things, just go and enjoy the AMAZING FOOD!!!

A Promising Start: The Food Is Good, Really Good.. Tandoor Indian Kitchen, new to downtown amidst the zig-zag shuffle of Portland's bus-mall redesign, is creating a delectable enticement to brave the jackhammers and detours.

With an already loyal clientele, Tandoor is ready to win you over with taste even where the fine dining atmosphere may be lacking. But, decor is at most third down the list of importance--an amiable, attentive and knowledgeable crew being second--to affordable and delicious Indian cuisine in a part of town where the food carts often win hands down. Here, the food wins with quality and portions, and take-out is always an option. In fact, Tandoor is a downtown gem to offer the always popular Indian lunch buffet to-go.

Tandoor advertises that they specialize in both Southern and Northern Indian cuisines, but it would be more accurate to suggest that they incorporate both styles of cooking into what owner Ramesh Rajendran readily admits is, simply, the way he cooks. Expect the menu to grow as the volume of business grows.

Pappadams are complientary at the start of your meal, served crisp and rolled rather than flat, although only one chutney option is offered. Entrees are served with either Basmati or Naan, both done perfectly, though consider ordering the excellent Garlic and Cilantro Naan in addition. The portions are respectable, and the taste is fresh. The Palak Paneer was served without cream, although we were given the option. The Vegetable Korma was perfect, with fresh vegetables in a perfectly balanced sauce. Owner/chef Ramesh arrived tableside to personally doublecheck our spiciness preference, and again during our meal to be sure we were satisfied. We were encouraged to ask if there was something we'd love to have that wasn't on the menu (well, samosa's for one, and more chutneys for another).

Our first impression yields an emphatic round of applause, and we hope the rest of downtown agrees. We will return.
