Nice ambience, decent food. Went there on a weekday, quite empty. Found a nearby street parking. The service was good (not great) and the interiors (decors) were great.

The food was ordinary, with some being good (Papdi Chaat, Tandoori Chicken) and some pretty ordinary (Gosht “Hydrabadi” Biryani).

The cocktails were horrible (some chai based alcoholic drink, another one that I don't see on the online menu).  View Less

Great food, HORRIBLE SERVICE!. I have been dining out with a group of girlfriends, once a month since 2000. Each month we choose a different restaurant, which not only gives us an opportunity to connect but try different places. For the month of November, we decided to go to East India Co Grill & Bar.

Since there are regularly 5-6 of dining, we made reservations. One of my friends arrived first, waited and a group came in behind her and was seated immediately. She had to inform the bartender that we had a reservation. Then I and another member of our party arrived and still had to wait to be seated.

Our wait staff was very cold and seemed annoyed with our group. Each person (5) at the table had to ask her for water as she passed by us multiple times. The only time she did come to us was to take our order, bringing out dishes and to bring our bill.

The food was excellent, don't get me wrong but there are other Indian restaurants with amazing food and service. I've never had such a bad experience as we did last night. I and my four other friends will never go back to East India Co because of this experience.

In this economy, I am surprised that this restaurant is still open with the lack pleasantries that is so commonly found in the service industry. In addition, as standard with large groups we had to pay automatic 20% gratuity.....maybe since she knew she would receive tips her service didn't matter.  View Less

East India CO. I have been with my family, several times in the past two years. Every time it is an enjoyable experience. We have group of friends who visit the Restaurant during Happy Hours, they have 5-6 appetizers for $3 each and all of them have the Indian punch, just like we have them at any nice restaurant in India . The comparison is directly to any high end restaurant in any big cities of India . Just great!

During the past 2 years we have had some food catered at our house. I must say here, that they are the only professionals in the area. We have tried almost all the Indian Caterers in town over the years and East India just stands out. The catering has 3 major things we looked into. A) The variety of food. The manager makes it a point to make the entire menu colorful; he has lots of ideas and does a presentation for us ahead of time. Each dish has a distinct flavor. B) The food is sent in nicely wrapped boxes, each box has proper tags for hot and cold items, and there is no spillage or lingering fragrance in my car when we have picked up. C) They have also delivered with a small fee, the staff is very professional, in time, and they come in uniform.

Since no body has reviewed there catering, I thought, it is time to mention here.

Tandori chicken and Eggplant - Yuk!. Eaten here many times. Usually good. But, this time, yuk. Eggplant dish was way too spicy and $14? You got to be kidding! Tandori chicken was two small chicken legs and two small thighs. $16! Tasteless.

I will stick to the butter chick and veg korma which are good, if not overpriced.  View Less

Great food and a warm, cozy ambience.. Finally, Portland gets a good, upscale Indian restaurant in downtown. I am an Indian and used to feel let down at not having any good option for fine dining (Indian) in downtown. East India Co. opened about two years back and filled that void. I have been a regular here since then.

Food: The food is essentially North Indian, except for the Hyderabadi Biryani, Vindaloo and the Goan shrimp. They have a relatively small menu, but everything is cooked very well. The Sheekh Kabab is a favourite of mine - succulent ground mutton on a skewer cooked to perfection with a blend of Mughlai spices. The Tandoori Chicken is better than any you would get in the city. The Rogan Josh and Malai Kofta are excellent curry options. The naans are fluffy and soft - just as one would expect. The dinner comes with complementary papads that go well with the fare.

In the happy hour, their Lhassani Murg is to die for - fiery, flavourful chicken wings. They have an excellent bar with a lovely assortment of Indianized cocktails.

The only thing I did not enjoy at east India Co. was the Goan Jhinge ka Saalan - a shrimp dish from Goa - it was a little too hot - so much so that it dominated every other flavour that was supposed to be there.

Service: The service is excellent. The waiters are knowledgeable and courteous. They also try to accomodate any reasonable "tweaks" that you might want to your dish.

Ambience: The restaurant has a warm, cozy interior. High ceiling with dim-lit red walls, a large chandelier and a collection of photographs from the British era give an elegant feel to the restaurant.

On the whole, two thumbs up for East India Company. Highly recommended for any lover of Indian food, or someone who wants to start exploring the rich tapestry of North Indian cuisine.  View Less
