What Our Expert Scouts Say

Broder

Pretty piles of hot aebelskiver, smoked trout hash, monumental breakfast boards and grapefruit mimosas--this is the breakfast of champions. With so much ado about their morning meal, it's easy to forget that this charming Clinton cafe also serves happy hour and dinner Wed-Sat.

The atmosphere couldn't be any more charming, the waitstaff couldn't be any more endearing and the food couldn't be any more enjoyable! Family and people friendly!

Delish Swedish food in an oh-so-cute setting. Stop in for Happy Hour or dinner to avoid the long brunch lines, and try the Surf & Turf Bord (salami, ham, gravlax, smoked trout, pickled herring, and a wedge of cheese).

Their Scandinavian cuisine provides another reason to venture to Clinton Street (as if you needed one).

Poor service and average food...great promotional photos though!. There is not much Scandinavian about this place other than the menu and place settings from Ikea.

We had breakfast. It was on the low end of average, and portions were small with more emphasis on cute than good... very heavy on the butter and cream.

The service was really poor. We arrived at 9:30 with 4 people ahead of us in line, and did not get served until 11:15. It was not worth the wait. The blairing techno music nearly drove us nuts, and the persnickety waiter was nearly as irritating. We felt more like we were dining in a gay techno club than a scandinavian cafe.

I do not recommend this restaurant.

Good for people looking for something different. I went to Broder for breakfast. There were a few people waiting in the curtained entrance already so it was pretty cramped for a while and the server was a bit slow to clear off the tables and seat people. The food was interesting enough, yet very simple, and the presentation is VERY charming. However it did take quite some time to get our food, about 40 minutes or so. Only after we finished our coffee before our food got to our table did our server apologize for the lag. Despite the glacial pace, I find the menu a good alternative to the standard breakfasts in town and I would recommend this place to others bored with their hotcakes, just not when they are in a hurry.

Final straw- bad service & stone cold food. I have been to Broders four times. I must be honest- the food is great. Small portions, but interesting dishes.

I keep going back because I am hoping that this time the service will be different. I took a friend to Broder today. We waited outside for about a half hour for a table- Ok, I understand that this part is not Broder's fault. They finally set up a couple of extra tables outside. I was dubious about taking a table outside, because I knew that inside the restaurant the service is mediocre, at best. I was worried that we would be completely forgotten- and we were. We got to the restaurant at 11- we sat down at 11:30- it took well over an hour to get our food. Once we were done eating I gave our waiter the credit card I watched him stick my credit card in his shirt pocket. I knew he would forget about it- and he did. I finally chased him down after 20 minutes at the cash register and reminded him he needed to run the credit card. We left Broder at 1:47PM. It took us 2 hours and 47 minutes- start to finish to have breakfast. This time our food was stone cold and for me, this was the final straw.

I have a good Finnish friend. I was planning on taking her to Broder this week for her birthday- nada. I can't take the chance on this restaurant again. There are only about 10-12 tables in this restaurant. I can't figure out for the life of me why is takes SO LONG to get the food cooked. I wish it were different.

Broder rocks!. Broder has exceptional food. It is very flavorful and different than any other place in town that you'll visit. If you like lamb, try the lamb burger. I have not had a bad experience there, and my wife and I go there often. I recommend it to anyone who has never been, or anyone else for that matter. Go there if you have a little time, the service can be a bit slow, but it is all worth it.

Great Food, Great Service. We found Broder because it is located in the same space as another great breakfast spot that we used to love. We love Broder even more. The food is fantastic, and perfectly portioned. While the space is small, they do a lot with the limitations, making eating there more of an intimate, almost community oriented experience. And the service? Absolutely one of the best waiters we've ever had. He was punctual, nice and quick. The kitchen perfectly timed our meals, and everyone in the place seemed to be working together well. Broder is by far one of our favorite breakfast spots in Portland.

worst service ever in Portland. If you are not a friend of the owner, don't go there. They won't get you a table, unless you fight for one for your own.

They don't apologize for their bad service. If you complain, they send you out. A couple of very arrogant "waiters". Having a nice brunch in SE part of Portland is such a joy. But, you won't have it at Broder.
