Alu Wine Bar & Lounge

A Sexy European Wine Chateau

  • International Wines & Beers
  • Casual European Cuisine
  • Rich Inviting Atmosphere

"...feels unlike any other bar in Portland." The Oregonian

"The shimmering, tasteful details just prove someone has infused Alu with a whole lot of love." The Portland Tribune

"My only reservation in writing about Alu is I'd prefer no one else knew about it; that it remained our private hideaway." Portland Food and Drink

From a unique wine list, massive selection of international beers, and fantastic pan-European menu, Alu is truly an experience to remember.

Chef Sandro Di Giovani has created a whimsical yet inspired menu to complement Alu's grand European styling. The warm 'chateau' interior sets it apart thanks to the talents of designer Keith Shrader, who made owner Paul Wagner's vision a reality. A talented team of artists wanted Alu to be one of a kind.

Also enjoy Alu's charming patio where the chef will be grilling inviting new offerings for the Summer season...

We had a great time, but on that night the chef was gone because of a family emergency and we could only do a limited menu which was still good. I was there a week before and there was zero seating on the patio so we had to wait for a pretty long time. We had a great Rose wine at the bar and finally got a seat out back 30 minutes later. The patio is very private and feels like hanging out in your own back yard. Comfy! It is a good place to drop by after work for all of us. You might call to see if they will do reservations since I'm not sure.

Pros: Beautiful bar, very European feeling patio, nice server.

Cons: They need more outside seating for sure. Didn't know what "Alu" was for ages because the sign doesn't say.

I had high hopes for Alu. I had read about it in the Oregonian and it sounded like a place I would really love. I will admit the decor was well done, and the menu items looked really tasty, however I never actually tried any food because the service was so bad. The bartender was very busy chatting with a girlfriend at that the bar, and seemed very put out when we sat down at the bar. When he finally got around to us he was very rude and made a number of jokes at our expense. We had one glass of wine and left. He seemed very happy to see us go despite the fact that the place was empty. Some staff changes are in order if this place is going to survive.
